POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:
Butte College operates one of the largest community college student funded transportation services in California. The Transportation Mechanic Senior is the lead for the Transportation Department and provides leadership role in the shop for bus, vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair to support student education with bus transportation and support staff operations equipment.
  • This position is entitled to progressive longevity increase at the following rate (see CSEA 11.3 (Download PDF reader)):
    • 3% (7-10 years)
    • 5% (10-15 years)
    • 7% (15-20 years)
    • 9% (20+ years)
  • This position is entitled to progressive vacation accrual at the following rate:
    • 11 days per year (0-5 years)
    • 16 days per year (6-10 years)
    • 21 days per year (11-14 years)
    • 23 days per year (15 or more years)
  • This position receives sick leave of 12 days for a fiscal year of employment. This position also receives 11 scheduled holiday days off with pay as well as a paid winter holiday break as determined by the holiday schedule (see CSEA 8.7.1 (Download PDF reader)).

  • Current position work schedule is Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Work schedule may vary dependent upon District need and may include work on weekends, holidays and on-call shifts.
  • Compensation of On-Call Shifts at a rate of $25 per day of on-call shift for workdays, and $50 per day of on-call for non-workdays (see CSEA 15.13.6).

OVERVIEW:
Under the direction of an administrator, performs a variety of duties and responsibilities related to the oversight and lead direction of departmental workflow which may include but is not limited to; maintaining parts and supplies, working with outside supply and repair vendors, scheduling repairs and work projects, scheduling bus routes, travel trips and driver assignments, overseeing the maintenance work order system, providing training and performing inspections and maintenance of department systems and equipment. Performs the full range of functions assigned to the Transportation Mechanic II as needed or required. Performs other duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the Senior/Lead technical specialist in the Transportation Mechanic series. High levels of independent judgment are required. Duties may involve performing the most technical and difficult tasks requiring specialized or advanced skill in one or more areas of work assigned. As needed, may operate District buses and vehicles over designated routes and on field trips/travel. Work schedules may vary dependent on District need and may include regular day shifts, weekends, holidays and on-call shifts.



Representative Duties:

The duties recorded below are representative of the duties of the class and are not intended to cover all the duties performed by incumbent(s) of any particular position. The essential duties of the class are indicated with an asterisk *
  1. Develops and implements a preventive maintenance program for all buses, vehicles and equipment. Oversees daily workflow of the Transportation Department including processing, prioritizing, assigning and reviewing work requests.*
  2. Diagnoses malfunctions, schedules repairs and performs complex mechanical work, including overhauling engines, transmissions, fuel systems, differentials, wheel cylinders and brakes; installing rings, rods and main bearings; repairs lighting systems; diagnoses and repairs electronic fuel injection fuel injection systems, computers and sensors.*
  3. Tunes engines; adjusts points, condensers, timing, carburetors, valves, clutches and brakes.*
  4. Lubricates motorized equipment; clean and replaces oil filters; charges batteries, and mounts, balances and repairs tires of all types.*
  5. Welds and fabricates parts as needed.*
  6. Services and repairs air conditioning systems.*
  7. Performs minor body repairs and painting; reupholsters bus seats.*
  8. Prepares vehicles to pass the state smog check, diesel emissions and smoke testing programs. Tests or has vehicles tested and maintains records as required. In coordination with supervisor, prepares and submits required reports.*
  9. Estimates the cost of repairs; keeps records of repairs and maintenance work; orders parts and supplies as needed; verifies orders/deliveries, invoices and pricing and outside vendor repairs; may analyze actual costs compared to estimated cost.*
  10. Ensures compliance with all department policies and procedures, including safety regulations. Assists supervisor in coordinating and providing staff training in the utilization of proper protective gear and equipment as needed and required.*
  11. Assists supervisor with functions to include, but is not limited to performing safety inspections, inspecting and maintaining department systems; handling, storage and disposal of hazardous waste and managing surplus property. Trains and provides technical guidance and leadership to co-workers. Fills in for supervisor in his or her absence.*
  12. Operates a variety of office and shop equipment to include but not limited to, multi-line phones, work order systems, radio systems, computers and electronic diagnostic equipment, etc; may compose correspondence, update forms, gather and compile information for reports, prepare requisitions, etc.*
  13. As needed, drives buses and other motorized vehicles; operates truck and trailer to haul equipment to and from campus.
  14. Serves on a variety of District committees as requested.
  15. May perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications/Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Certificate of completion of a formal trade apprenticeship program related to this position; OR
  • Associate's Degree in automotive technology or a related field or the equivalent**; AND
  • Three (3) years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities of this position; AND
  • Graduation from high school, G.E.D. or the equivalent**.

* Associate's Degree education equivalency equals two (2) years of increasingly responsible work experience for each full year (24-30 units) of college. Work experience must be in an office setting.
** High school education equivalency equals an adult education diploma or four (4) years of full-time, paid work experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
(To be maintained throughout duration of employment with the District.)
  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's license with air brake endorsements issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles;

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • As a condition of employment, applicants must pass a required pre-employment drug and alcohol test and all subsequent Department of Transportation random drug and alcohol testing.
  • As a condition of employment, applicants must provide a current DMV Driver License Record report issued within previous 30-days.

Possession of or the ability to obtain within the first 6-months of employment (during probationary period):
  • Valid commercial driver's license school bus and passenger endorsements issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles*
  • Valid school bus driver certificate*
  • Valid Medical Examiners Certificate (MEC) as required for operation of a bus
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certificate*
  • Valid MVAC 609 Certificate (Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning EPA 609 Certificate*
  • Valid Fork Lift and Aerial Lift Operators certificate*

* District will provide training for certifications. All licenses and certificates must be maintained throughout duration of employment with the District.

  • Experience, training and certifications in gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered automotive and/or medium/heavy duty truck/bus multiplexed electronic engine control systems, preventive maintenance, and repair. (Example; Cummins Insite, Caterpillar ET, Allison Transmission, ASE Certifications, Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning Systems)
  • ASE Master Mechanic Certification: Automotive and light truck, or medium heavy duty truck, or school bus
  • Valid school bus driver certificate
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certificate
  • Valid MVAC 609 certificate
  • Valid Fork Lift and Aerial Lift certificate
  • Experience, training and certifications in school bus maintenance, repair and inspection
  • Experience driving medium/heavy trucks, buses or school buses
  • Experience working within an educational institution

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of: District policies and procedures; safe driving practices; California Motor Vehicle and Education Codes applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of students, staff and faculty; tools, parts, equipment and methods used in maintaining and repairing trucks, buses and other motorized vehicles; preventative maintenance and methods of lubricating and servicing vehicles; tools and test equipment required to diagnose electrical and mechanical defects in motorized vehicles; exhaust emission control systems; computer usage and associated software; estimating repairs and preparing cost estimates.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Tasks require occasionally moving heavy objects (50 to 100 lbs), exposure to weather and temperature extremes, machinery hazards, intense noise from machinery, poor lighting, electric currents, toxic agents and fumes, working in confined spaces, traffic hazards.
