Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, operate instructional art laboratories; fire, maintain and repair kilns; formulate ceramic glazes and clay bodies; operate, maintain and repair a wide variety of specialized equipment including mixers, wheels, welding equipment, and hand and power tools; assist students in the proper and effective operation and use of a variety of equipment, chemicals and materials used in art courses; order, receive and store supplies; maintain equipment, inventories, records, and reports; perform duties to support any and all art department courses and activities as directed.




Distinguishing Characteristics:



This classification provides technical coordination in the studio arts area, specifically ceramics, performing a variety of standard to difficult duties, including instructional program support, tutoring and administrative activities, maintaining inventory of glaze materials and clay, and exercising skill in various capacities to operate, maintain and repair equipment.



Essential Duties: The following duties are typical of those performed by employees in this job title; however, employees may perform other related duties, and not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each employee in the job title.



  • Prepares, compiles, collates, maintains, updates and disseminates instructional materials in accordance with instructors' directions

  • Develops and presents learning materials and instructional exercises to individuals and groups

  • Tutors students individually and/or in small groups to reinforce class material taught in ceramics while keeping abreast of Ceramics program changes

  • Coordinates materials, equipment, facilities and supplies for classes, including a workflow system for firing kilns

  • Sets up, installs, maintains and services equipment, materials and supplies used in classes, laboratories, workshops and supplemental tutoring sessions

  • Trains students and others in the safe use of specialized equipment (e.g. including, but not limited to: gas and electric kilns, pug mill, clay mixer, clay extruder, dry sander, drill press, jig saw, and glaze room hand tools), computer hardware and software, and procedures and processes

  • Answers students' questions and advises regarding ceramic course assignments; including the full range of ceramics courses taught in the studio arts program

  • Assists in completing and processing various forms, certificates, and other documents

  • Maintains physical environment and condition of ceramics area and the greater art studio and its equipment

  • Maintains detailed budget and financial records

  • Maintains an inventory of and requisitions supplies and equipment

  • Maintains the security of special, technical or hazardous supplies and equipment, and keeps current with developments in ceramic safe practices and implementation of procedures;

  • Operates standard office equipment and instructional media

  • Prepares periodic and special reports

  • Attends to a variety of office administrative details such as arranging for the repair of equipment, transmitting information and keeping reference materials up to date

  • Assists in the recruitment and selection of student assistants; provides instruction in safe work procedures

  • May conduct workshops, orientations and meetings

  • Performs related duties as required or assigned




Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to:


Knowledge:



  • Subject matter

  • Effective instructional techniques

  • Principles, theories, practices, methods and equipment of a ceramics studio

  • Health and safety practices related to the tools and equipment used in a ceramics studio (e.g. including, but not limited to: gas and electric kilns, pug mill, clay mixer, clay extruder, wet sander, circle cutting jig, drill press, jig saw and glaze room hand tools)

  • Standard office practices and procedures including filing, and the operation of office equipment, including a computer

  • Detailed recordkeeping and budget tracking

  • Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation



Skills and Abilities:



  • Safely operate, maintain and demonstrate the use of specialized equipment (e.g. including, but not limited to: gas and electric kilns, pug mill, clay mixer, clay extruder, sander, circle cutting jig, drill press, jig saw and glaze room hand tools), supplies, materials and procedures used in a ceramics studio

  • Apply and explain instructional methods and procedures

  • Read, understand, and present course materials to students

  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the community

  • Keep abreast of Ceramics program changes

  • Coordinate multiple projects and meeting deadlines

  • Maintain accurate records, files, and databases

  • Prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence and similar written materials

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships

  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions

  • Operate a computer to enter, edit, and retrieve data and generate reports

  • Learn new software as required for duties as noted above

  • Effectively operate and maintain an orderly instructional environment



Other Requirements:



  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California driver's license and safe driving record during the course of employment

  • Must be willing and able to work at both Gilroy and Hollister campus sites



  • Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to maneuver equipment and lift materials weighing up to 50 pounds





Illustrative Education and Experience:


A typical way to obtain the above knowledge and skill is a combination of education and experience equivalent to:



Equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college with college level, lower division* coursework in ceramics studio *(transfer-level, sophomore or above) which will provide the knowledge and skills to support the Ceramics program and two years of experience in either educational support work which has included interaction with students in a classroom or tutorial setting, or work in the program area to which assigned.



Physical Characteristics: The physical abilities involved in the performance of essential duties are:



Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting up to 50lbs


unassisted, bending, standing, climbing, or walking while performing classroom demonstrations


and experiments. Must be able to safely operate equipment, and handle, store and dispose of


hazardous materials. Working environment is laboratory and classrooms primarily with


exposure to noise from equipment and fumes from chemicals use.
