Student Health Educator

Essential Functions:
Health Educator will contribute to: disseminating current health information; educating students about health issues; nurturing healthy attitudes and behaviors for students to make informed decisions regarding personal health; promote a culture that values and supports a healthy community; and coordinate university's public health and training intervention programs.

As part of a team of health educators, this person develops, implements, and evaluates theory and evidence-based health education programming focusing on prevention, risk reduction, and health promotion for all NCCU students; serves as a campus resource for health information; provides leadership and expertise to build a comprehensive educational program; networks with campus departments and organizations. Position will conduct needs assessments, and identify areas of student issues and concerns and develop goals and objectives for interventions; will develop program content, learning resources, and evaluation tools for specific education interventions; will provide individual consultation to students with specific health education needs; collaborate with other campus resources to ensure accuracy of information and effectiveness of programming; coordinate information and activities with community resources and serves as a liaison with community agencies as appropriate. Position will train and monitor peer educators regarding health information.

Minimum Education/Experience:
A Masters degree in Health Education, Public Health, Nursing, Sociology or related field. Two years experience in Health Education, a portion of which must have included some program coordination and oversight responsibilities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Candidate should possess a thorough knowledge of principles and practices of Public Health Education and considerable knowledge of methods and techniques of disseminating wellness/health education information to the universitys campus and surrounding community. Must possess skills with audio-video, and computer technologies, and an understanding of evaluation and outcome assessment.

Must have abilities to: serve as leader for prevention efforts by envision, articulating, and initiating population based initiatives; develop strategies that are effective with college students and the university community; recruit student staff, and provide training, and supervision as appropriate; implement periodic health surveys and other assessment initiatives to identity unmet needs and evaluate programs, and or initiative effectiveness; assist in evaluation of student learning outcomes; identify possible grants for funding new initiatives; participate in relevant conferences and seminars, through attendance, and participating as presenter, facilitator, etc.; present wellness topics for a variety of academic classes on topics such as contraception, womens health, stress management, disease prevention, STIs, nutrition, and fitness as requested; advise enrolled students; assist with coordination, marketing, and supporting all campus events sponsored or co-sponsored by SHCS; research, design, and edit relative publications (i.e.: pamphlets, brochures, newsletters, etc.); serve as guest lecturer and adjunct professor (part-time) as schedule permits; in collaboration with Residential Life staff, design and develop instructional programs for Resident Assistants; develop, organize and coordinate health education programs and identify health care problems, recommend courses of action, and evaluate results; adapt and implement national and local information, campaigns and education programs to meet the needs of high risk populations in the service area; maintain interface with civic groups and health service agencies to develop health goals and determine availability of health services; prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions; plan and develop health education program outlines incorporating various learning techniques and formats (i.e.: group discussion, lecture, role play, etc.); develop and design promotion of health education events and programs to distribute throughout the campus community; assist SHCS in Health Education and Promotion surveys and special projects; networking with professors and other campus professionals in creating opportunities conducive for health education programming and preventive health messages; assist in development and execution of various health awareness days/week on campus: Sexual Violence Awareness Week, Breast Cancer Awareness Days, Great American Smokeout, World AIDS Day, AIDs Awareness Week, Love and Body Week, Spring Break Awareness Days, Alcohol Awareness Week, and etc.
