Detailed Description:
With the support of the President's Advisory Board on Inclusion and Diversity (PABID), this professional staff will work with the Director and Associate Director of Admissions to further expand programs for the recruitment and retention of students of color.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Evaluating/Interviewing/Making Admission & Scholarship Decision on SSS Applications:
  • Participate in all aspects of the application review process which includes:
  • Calculating cumulative grade point average (GPA)
  • Analyzing the level of difficulty of courses taken by applicants
  • Determining the level of competitiveness of school attended by applicants
  • Objectively quantifying applicants' essay, letter of recommendation and extra-curricular activities
  • Make decisions on whether to admit or deny applicants based on the applicants' individual profile, the overall (and individual school's) application pool and the applicants' potential contribution to the campus, and the mission of the University.
  • Decide which applicants will be awarded a merit scholarship and how much to award based on the above mentioned admissions criteria.
  • Communicate with families and school counselors throughout the process.

    Counsel Students and Conducting Info Sessions:
  • Counsel prospective students and families about admission, financial aid, academic, and community life programs, and student life at the University.
  • Conduct workshops to outreach groups (AVID, Upward Bound, CalSoap, etc.) assisting prospective students and their parents about general college planning and the higher education system.
  • Serve on panels to interpret and discuss admission practices/policies put forth by our governing organizations, the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and Western Association for College Admission Counseling (WACAC).
  • Have regular responsibilities for meeting with visitors to campus by conducting information sessions, meeting individually with families or counselors, providing front desk coverage when needed, and generally participating in the office's on-campus recruitment efforts.

    Territory Management/Recruitment Travel:
  • Conduct presentations at visits to high schools.
  • Attend college night and fair programs.
  • Conduct interviews, meet with alums, and carry out other recruitment activities in designated recruitment territories.
  • Manage a territory out of state, a region in California and a section of San Diego.
  • Decide on which schools to visit, fairs to attend, and cities to hold receptions in based on data gathered from school reports, past travel evaluation records, school profiles and consultations with other counselors.
  • Schedule and coordinate all visits, fairs and receptions.
  • Travel will last approximately three (3) months in the Fall and two (2) months in the Spring.

    Manage/Provide Leadership for Collateral Responsibilities
  • Manage SOAR (Student Outreach and Recruitment) Program and tour guides.
  • Coordinate interview program for multicultural students.
  • Manage Me@USD Multicultural Overnight Program.
  • Serve as liaison with Student Support Services (SSS).
  • Conduct outreach activities for prospective students and their families.
  • Collaborate with various internal and external organizations which support the education goals of low-income students and students of color.
  • Manage Community Based Orgs on-campus programming o Serve as Liaison to Community Based Orgs and Outreach Group: CalSoap, College Making It Happen, AVID, Upward Bound, Reality Changers, YALLA, Barrio Logan Institute, Young Scholars, National Hispanic Institute, Dream the Impossible.

    Job Requirements:
    Minimum Qualifications:
    The ideal candidate should have an understanding of the selective, private college admission process, the strengths of an undergraduate liberal arts experience, and the value of inclusive diversity.
  • A Bachelor's degree with 2-3 years in college admissions work experience preferred
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision
  • Must possess excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to travel (including air travel) for up to two (2) consecutive weeks: nights and weekends are required
  • Strong work ethic
  • Must feel comfortable in a team-oriented, collaborative work environment
  • Knowledge of and willingness to learn and work with technology; specifically word processing environments, internet navigation, databases, and e-mail correspondence
  • Knowledge of the University of San Diego and its programs
  • A commitment to the University's mission
  • A valid driver's license

    Performance Expectations - Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to use discretion when working with confidential materials
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment, in a variety of shared workspace settings
  • Working knowledge of database and CRM systems (Salesforce), as well as Microsoft Office
  • applications and Google Suite
  • Strong work ethic, initiative, and stellar interpersonal and customer service skills

    Special Conditions of Employment:
  • Ability to travel (including air travel) for up to two (2) consecutive weeks: nights and weekends are required
  • A valid driver's license

    Tools & Equipment Used:
    Familiarity with computers, multi-line phones, fax machines, copy machines, scanning machines, and printers. In addition, knowledge of word processing, internet, and database applications.

    Background check: Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.

    Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes.
