About the Opportunity

As part of a strategic initiative, coordinated across the university's Impact Engines Initiatives (https://impactengines.northeastern.edu/), the Healthier Air and People: Intelligent Solutions to Urban Pollution for Equity and Resilience (HAP-iSUPER) Impact Engine (IE), hosted in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northeastern University seeks a Research Technician to manage deployment of 150-200 stationary air quality sensors across several neighborhoods of Greater Boston and to coordinate associated air quality field sampling programs using (1) a mobile monitoring vehicle and (2) staffed sampling campaigns. Major responsibilities will include (1) field equipment installation and management such as assembly, calibration, testing, installation, monitoring, and maintenance of sensor systems, leading and designing field data collection campaigns, and manage data from field studies, and and creation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and other related documentation; (2) documentation and reporting, preliminary data analytics, attending meetings with stakeholders and making technical presentations, contributing to report writing and twice-yearly reviews; (3) coordinating with project team members on related research activities; (4) co-mentoring undergraduate or graduate student researchers. This role will comprise collaborative work with a highly interdisciplinary group of students, faculty, and staff, interactions with stakeholders and partners; integration with research models and efforts leveraging collected data to ensure high quality project deliverables.

This is a full-time position (40 hrs/week) with start date as soon as possible. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis as they are received. One-year contract renewable for up to 4 additional years contingent on availability of funding and positive performance reviews. This position will be based on the Boston campus of Northeastern University with substantial local travel required.

Qualifications:

Position requires a self-driven individual who can work well in a busy environment that requires multitasking and friendly and professional interactions with a wide range of individuals.
  • Minimum BS in a related technical field and 2 years work experience in a hands-on technical role; MS in a technical field preferred
  • Candidate should be interested in environmental and sensor systems and have some experience interacting with commercial sensors of some type, including understanding data logging, electrical interfaces, reading specifications, etc.
  • Candidate must be dedicated to learning about new types of sensors and instruments, including operational and maintenance Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and processes for ensuring data integrity.
  • Candidate must have a current driving license and clean driving record.
  • Candidate must be highly organized, have good attention to detail, and be able to set and meet deadlines. Candidate should enjoy working on a team but be able to independently manage work flows related to this project.

Basic experience in computer coding/data analytics preferred
