Research Assistant - Student (WORK STUDY)

We are looking for a highly motivated, hard-working student with an interest in biology to become part of our neuroscience research team at Harvard Medical School. We conduct research on somatosensory circuits (responsible for the sense of touch). We use a myriad of techniques in combination with mouse genetic tools to answer basic questions about how touch is represented in the cerebral cortex.
In this position, the candidate will learn and perform laboratory techniques such as mouse husbandry, PCR and gel electrophoresis, histology and immunostaining, microscopy, rodent surgery, behavioral analyses, and accurate data recording/lab notebook maintenance. Initially, the candidate will be responsible for assisting current lab members with their projects and helping with general lab tasks. As the candidate demonstrates proficiency and efficiency in the lab, opportunities to work more independently will be available and encouraged. Ideal applicants will have the ability to contribute and progress in this position for a majority of their collegiate career. Initially, we ask for a minimum of a one-year commitment.
IMPORTANT: This position involves a lot of time working with mice. Please take into consideration any allergies or aversion to working with mice prior to applying.
TIME COMMITMENT: You need to be available to work at least 8 hours per week during the school year. Hours and days are flexible. The expectation is that you are willing to keep this job for at least 1 year (preferably working over the summer), with the opportunity to stay longer if things are going well. Summer also often brings the opportunity for you to work additional hours and more independently on a small project of your own, which we would be happy to facilitate.
START DATE: March 2019 or earlier
STARTING SALARY: $12/hour
