University of Notre Dame

Research Scientist

The University of Notre Dame (ND.jobs) is accepting applications for a Research Scientist.

Applications will be accepted until 10/23/2017.

Center for Research Computing seeks a Research Scientist to pursue a research and development project with the goal of delivering a next generation framework and scientific gateway for presenting situational awareness information relative to natural hazards to community leaders and emergency response personnel.

This multi-faceted project will involve a multidisciplinary team of civil engineers, applied mathematicians, computer scientists and data scientists and community representatives. The position will focus on the development of a platform requiring a deep understanding and the ability to apply the following technologies:

1. Docker/Kubernetes. The aim is to develop a scalable and modular system that can be deployed using cloud computing methodology.

2. GIS systems, data and formats. The data generated by the hurricane and wind models will be presented in an advanced GIS system.

3. Conversion of Matlab development models to high performance C++ utilizing accelerators and machine learning frameworks. This code will require conversion to C++ utilizing hardware accelerators such as GPU/TPU and familiarity with machine learning/linear algebra frameworks such as Caffe or Tensorflow.

4. Immersive 3D visualization techniques. Data will be available that can be projected into a generalized 3D space for an immersive experience leading to a better understanding of the real time events. Extensive experience in technologies such as WebGL, 3D environments and application to Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality systems such as Occulus Rift will be essential.

5. Linked Data Methodology. Data for the project will be published using standardized controlled vocabularies in formats such as JSON-LD.

NOTE: A preferred candidate has been identified for this position.

Minimum Qualifications:
Doctoral degree (Ph.D., J.D., Ed.D.) The ideal candidate will have a solid background in either direct numerical simulation (DNS) or large eddy simulation (LES) for turbulent reacting flows as well as development experience implementing highly scalable algorithms in cloud environments. The candidate will have a track record of developing high performing algorithms for many-core / GPGPU architectures and be able to assess the relative benefits of task vs. SIMD parallelism. Parallel programming and algorithm development skills and experience with visualization programming as well as fluency in C/C++/cuda/matlab/Python is a necessity. Familiarity with Linked Data techniques and ontologies is strongly recommended. Experience in OpenGL/WebGL as well as 2D visualization is required. Must be fluent in Matlab/C++/Cuda. Experience with one or more of the following: Adaptive mesh refinement, computational fluid dynamics, statistical based simulation methodology, principal component analysis, containerization of computational codes. Unamanned Aerial Systems (UAS), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices, and large scale scientific instruments.

Preferred Qualifications:
