About the Opportunity

Under the supervision of the Chair, the Production Manager is responsible for managing the department's Creative Practice Research enterprise. This includes the coordination, scheduling, and systematizing of all production and design elements of the department's Production Program (Fall & Spring), as well as the coordination of Creative Practice Research projects sponsored by the department (Summer).

The Production Manager collaborates with the faculty, staff, and students to achieve the department's artistic and educational goals and ensure the highest production values for all productions and projects. They supervise the department staff responsible for production: Costume Shop Supervisor, and the Technical Director. Duties include scheduling, budgeting, and securing of performance rights and royalties; working with Student Activities to schedule dressing rooms and other venue needs in the Curry Student Center; defining production schedules and calendars, including deadlines and rehearsal and performance dates and times.

The Production Manager manages the department audition process each semester and coordinates bi-monthly production meetings; they oversee technical and dress rehearsals for each department production to help insure a collaborative production development process.

The Production Manager contracts and communicates with guest artists, including directors, designers, technicians, musical directors, choreographers, and musicians. They serve as the Course Manager / Instructor of Record for the department's production experience courses by handling the administrative aspects of the courses and working with faculty and staff to assign, supervise, and evaluate students on production crew responsibilities. They contribute up to five lessons per semester of specialized training in production management and related technical areas for Technical Theatre course, taught by a faculty member.

The Production Manager oversees the work of student Head Electricians, Prop Directors, and House Managers, in collaboration with the Costume Shop Supervisor and the Technical Director. The Production Manager supports additional creative practice research projects sponsored by the department during the summer months, helping to hire and supervise support staff as needed.

Workload schedule is inherently flexible: please note that evening and weekend hours may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

Skills and knowledge typically acquired through a bachelor's degree or equivalent and at least 3 - 5 years of relevant experience in stage management, production management, theatrical lighting, theatrical sound, theatrical projections, and/or theatrical properties is strongly preferred. Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft and Google suites. Experience with EMS is a bonus. Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner and gather/analyze information skillfully. Ability to work well under pressure and in group problem-solving situations. Ability to work with students of varying experience levels. Strong verbal communication skills, diplomatic and leadership skills. Teaching experience preferred but not required.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

(15%)Staff Supervision
  • Managing two Production Program Staff: Costume Shop Supervisor and Technical Director.


(30%) Production Supervision and Management
  • Securing rights.
  • Forming a production team; contracting and communicating with guest directors, designers, musical directors, choreographers, and musicians.
  • Working closely with faculty and guest directors as well as the Technical Director and Costume Shop Manager to ensure there are sufficient students to accomplish all the production needs.
  • Defining production calendar, design process and deadlines, rehearsal dates, times and venues.
  • Coordinating with Blackman events and Student Activities about space usage and needs. Scheduling of all rehearsals and performances; overseeing technical rehearsals.
  • Hosting bimonthly production meetings.


(15%) Creative Practice Research Support and Coordination
  • Working with the CAMD Research Development team and relevant faculty researchers to support funding proposals for creative practice research, including federal and private foundation grants, sponsorships, and philanthropic gifts.
  • Coordinating theater spaces for creative practice research and supporting research faculty as appropriate.


(30%) Course Administration, Technical Training Instruction, and Student Supervision
  • Serve as the Course Manager / Instructor of Record for the department's production experience courses by handling the administrative aspects.
  • Contribute up to five modules (lessons) per semester of specialized training in production management and related technical areas for a Technical Theatre course, taught by a faculty.
  • Oversee the assignment of students and their supervisors.
  • Coordinate with faculty, staff, and guest artist supervisors to assign production responsibilities and evaluate production assignments of students.
  • Oversee the work of student Master Electricians, Prop Masters, and House Managers, in collaboration with the Operations Manager, Costume Shop Supervisor and Technical Director.
  • Coordinating the work of the stage crew.


(10%) Audition Process Oversight and Equipment Management
  • Coordinate and manage the department's audition process at the beginning of each semester.
  • Overseeing the maintenance, purchase, and upgrades of theatre equipment (lighting, sound engineering, etc.) and ensuring the training/safety of all students using it.
