Job Description
The Presidential Writer drafts communications that reflect the vision, priorities, and voice of the University's President. This position requires exceptional writing and communications skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues across the University. Reporting to the President's Chief of Staff, the Presidential Writer will also work closely with the Senior Vice President for External Affairs, along with other campus partners.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Draft and edit announcements, speeches, talking points, statements, and scripts for the President on a wide range of topics, including university initiatives, academic achievements, community engagements, and special events.
  • Conduct thorough research on relevant topics, including trends and issues in higher education to inform written communications.
  • Craft correspondence for the President, maintaining consistency in tone, messaging, and branding across all communications.
  • Draft essays, op-eds, and other thought leadership pieces.
  • Route materials through various levels of review, overseeing quality control to ensure accuracy, clarity, coherence, and adherence to style guidelines.
  • Work closely with campus partners to ensure alignment with institutional messaging, strategic goals, and priorities.
  • Day-to-day oversight and management of the President's social media accounts.
  • Maintain up-to-date links to presidential public communications on the President's website.
  • Participate in University's contingency planning around public issues or controversies which might require presidential communications.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in English, humanities, communications, journalism, public relations, or related fields; Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in executive communications, public relations, higher education, or related fields.
  • Proven track record of writing executive communications for senior leadership.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with a demonstrated ability to craft persuasive, engaging, and audience-appropriate content across a range of media.
  • Strong research skills and the ability to synthesize complex information into clear, concise, and compelling written materials.
  • Strategic thinking skills and ability to articulate the University's mission, values, and priorities.
  • Ability to write meaningful, respectful, and thoughtful content for a wide range of audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and pivot quickly to adapt to evolving priorities.
  • Knowledge of AP Style, Chicago Manual of Style, or other style guides preferred.
  • Commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Conversant with different social media channels and the mechanisms for posting and managing engagement.
