Position Summary:
The Department of Chemistry at Willamette University, a primarily undergraduate institution dedicated to excellence in teaching and research, welcomes applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Research Scholar position in Environmental Chemistry to begin September 2017.

This position is supported through an NSF grant (PI: Dr. David Griffith) to study the sources and fates of halogenated estrogens in sewage-impacted waters. The main objectives of the project are to elucidate the mechanisms controlling the formation and distribution of halogenated estrogens in sewage effluent, to quantify halogenated estrogen photolysis and biodegradation rates at environmentally relevant concentrations, and to use this information to model the fate of a wide range of steroidal estrogens in a large river system.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Research objectives will be accomplished through a combination of laboratory, field, and modeling experiments, and will take advantage of a previously optimized triple quadrupole mass spectrometry method for measuring trace levels of estrogens in complex matrices. High-resolution mass spectrometry will be used to identify major transformation products and pathways.

In addition to research activities, the successful candidate will have opportunities to mentor undergraduate research projects and collaborate with experts in mass spectrometry and environmental engineering at Oregon State University. The PI has committed funds to support career development activities, including professional development workshops and participation at national conferences. The position also has opportunities to gain teaching experience in our ACS-approved Chemistry Department. Outreach activities will include collaborating with media experts to produce podcasts for the general public and integrating research and teaching at Willamette University.

Starting salary is $47,476 plus benefits.

Required Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, or related field completed by August 15, 2017 is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates with expertise in low-level contaminant analysis, high-resolution and tandem mass spectrometry, as well as those interested in teaching and research with undergraduates are encouraged to apply.
