Part-time Lecturer, Art Design

About the Opportunity

The Part-Time Lecturer will lead seminar/recitations for an introductory art history course, ARTH 1001/1002 Visual Intelligence. Responsibilities include leading 100-minute discussion sections in ARTH 1002 based on material presented in the lecture of ARTH 1001; leading discussions on the readings and the thematic topic of the week; arranging visits to museums and galleries and leading students through those exhibitions; grading short weekly assignments and the final project-a visual artefact with a written component. The PTL will work closely with the faculty member teaching the main lecture course (ARTH 1001) and the Teaching Assistants for that course, and also attend the 100-minute lecture each week, to ensure that the two sections work together as a seamless whole. Starting Date: September.

ABOUT THE COURSE

Visual Intelligence is our foundational art history course, introducing students to key terms and concepts in art history/visual studies, preparing students not only for upper-level art history courses, but also enabling them to discuss their own work using the relevant vocabulary. Although it is a 1000-level course, students may take the course in any year of study, and therefore levels of experience and understanding may vary. The course provides students with the tools to discuss and analyze art and visual culture both in written form and discussion. The course is divided into a large lecture (ARTH 1001), run by a permanent faculty member and smaller recitation sections (ARTH 1002), run by the PTL. The lecture introduces students to key concepts and terms, which then get discussed, workshopped, and explored in the recitations and weekly assignments. The two courses work together to provide students with a holistic experience that combines theory, practice, and experience.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The Visual Studies Part-Time Lecturer will teach several weekly 100-minute recitation sections of Visual Intelligence. Topics vary depending on the semester due to guest speaker availability and exhibition programming in the Boston area. Topics may include (but not be limited to) the concept of "the Gaze;" perspective and ways of looking; new media; appropriation; photography, film, abstraction, and the Anthropocene. The role involves attending the weekly 100-minute lectures of ARTH 1001, and then teaching several 100-minute sections of ARTH 1002 later in the week. In ARTH 1002, the PTL will engage students in discussions about the key terms and concepts introduced in the lecture and demonstrate them through practical activities and museum and exhibition visits. The PTL will also grade several short weekly assignments and the final project - a visual artifact with a written component. Starting Date: September.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will have a PhD (or near completion) in art history, visual studies, or other adjacent field and experience teaching at the college level. This is a 1000-level introductory course, but students taking the course may be from any year of undergraduate study. Therefore candidates must have the ability to effectively engage Northeastern students at course-relevant levels of study, whether beginning, intermediate or advanced, and grade writing and practical assignments effectively.
