PHLEBOTOMIST/CLINICAL LABORATORY ASSISTANT (Phlebotomist/Clinical Laboratory Assistant)- 11/12 & 12/12

Primary Duties:
Under the supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Physician, the Phlebotomist/Clinical Laboratory Assistant supports overall laboratory operations in the Student Health Center. The incumbent performs phlebotomy, and basic Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA)-waived laboratory testing, for use in the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems. This is a first-level laboratory classification requiring some formal and on-the-job training to perform the work activities outlined below. Incumbents must possess and maintain certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I, (CPT-1) as defined by the California Department of Public Health Services, Laboratory Field Services Branch (LFS), which permits the incumbent to perform skin punctures and venipuncture. The Phlebotomist/Clinical Laboratory Assistant's work is clinical and medical in nature and requires specific medical training and certifications.

Required Education:

Incumbents must possess and maintain certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I, as defined by the California Department of Health Services, which permits the incumbent to perform skin punctures and venipuncture. Phlebotomy certification requires:

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess sufficient related experience to perform the work activities described above, which usually requires six to twelve months of related experience in a health care setting.
  • Current Phlebotomy Certificate from the California Department of Public Health Services, Laboratory Field Services Branch (LFS).
Special Requirements:
  • The person holding this position is considered a General Mandated Reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 (revised July 21, 2017) as a condition of employment.
  • A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position. This considered a sensitive position. Current CSU, Chico employees are subject to a background check (including a criminal record check) if voluntarily moving into a sensitive position, regardless of any background checks previously conducted. Incumbent is responsible for the safety and security of Level 1 data, sometimes also referred to as Level 1 protected data.   • Incumbent must possess certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I, as defined by the California Department of Health Services.
  • The selected candidate must pass a post-offer pre-employment physical examination, infectious disease screening and vision test.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbent/applicant will need to be able to perform the essential job functions (duties) of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. Personal protective clothing required while working i.e. laboratory coats, closed-toe shoes, safety glasses, latex gloves, etc. Employee will be required to frequently sit, move, or stand at a counter as well as moving in small spaces within the lab. Also includes the need to sit or work at a microscope and computer terminal for long periods of time. There is exposure to a heat source used when sterilizing while plating cultures. There is also noise exposure from centrifuge and other equipment. Must be able to travel across campus to other offices and buildings for meetings and events.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position will work in the Student Health Services in laboratory areas that are kept clean. Will work with bio-hazardous material and chemicals after appropriate training. Moderate noise levels exist at various times in the laboratory. Tools used in the clinical laboratory setting including pipettes syringes, tubes, laboratory glassware as well as cell counters, centrifuges, heat blocks and incubators, Genprobe system, spectophotometers, vortexers and rotators, etc.
