Salary:
Salary Range: $4,179 - $5,942 per month (anticipated hiring salary: $4,179 per month)

Note: This is a full-time (40 hours per week), probationary, exempt appointment

Organizational Description:
The Native American Initiative has been established to increase the number of Native American students enrolling and graduating at Fresno State. The following are essential components of the initiative:
  • Reach out to Native American students through partnerships and collaborations with Rancherias, school districts, and tribal agencies serving Native American students.
  • Develop and maintain support networks within the university and the Native American community.
  • Create a place that fosters a welcoming and supportive environment where students feel they have a home away from home. It is a place for studying, programming, faculty, staff, student meetings, social engagement, and student community building.
  • Promote and support events that bring Native American students and community to the campus.
  • Provide student academic monitoring and advisement that includes an "early warning" system.
  • Connect students with mentors (faculty, staff, and alumni)

    Overview:
    Reporting to the Director of Outreach and Special Programs, the incumbent's primary responsibility is to assist in executing programs and events that prepare and recruit Native American students for university enrollment. The incumbent will perform professional Student Services work and tasks in accordance with established work procedures to contribute to the collaboration and coordination with the Office of Outreach and Special Programs, for the day-to-day implementation of the Native American Initiative with the primary objective to increase the enrollment of Native-American students. The incumbent is responsible for implementing the goals of the Office of Outreach and Special Programs and the Native American Initiative, including providing student advisement and guidance, assistance with the development and implementation of college preparation, access and enrollment programs and activities, and represent the university in various educational and community programs; plan and apply basic interviewing and advising techniques, exercise sound judgement, and develop and maintain positive relationships with educational personnel and school districts.

    Position Summary:
  • Assist with the implementation and coordination of the day-to-day Native American Initiative, with focus on the outreach and recruitment of Native American students
  • Assist in the development, planning and implementation of a holistic outreach plan to increase the enrollment of first generation, low income, and underrepresented students
  • Collaborate with campus programs to help Native American students take part in critical support services
  • Provide support in the planning, coordination, and successful execution of outreach and recruitment conferences, workshops, tours, receptions and other community events
  • Assist with the development and execution of a comprehensive marketing and communication plan to outreach and attract Native American and Alaska Native students to Fresno State
  • Assist in the development of publications, brochures, and websites/webpages
  • Help develop and increase strategic partnerships and relationships in Fresno State service area with schools and community agencies
  • Communicate, advise and present information to parents and students regarding university admissions, enrollment, student support services, and academic program information
  • Collaborate with school districts, community colleges, and university personnel to develop a seamless transition plan for incoming students
  • Keep abreast of innovative outreach and recruitment strategies to implement best practices
  • Represent the university at college nights and transfer days, career days, and special community events such as powwows
  • Assist with the planning, scheduling and coordination of student/group visits to campus
  • Help establish relationships with relevant student organizations
  • Help establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with relevant faculty, staff, students and organizations on campus
  • Review and analyze K-12 regional and school/district based enrollment data to help identify target schools and assist with the implementation of innovative outreach and recruitment strategies and visitations
  • Work with Office of Undergraduate Student Recruitment, Admissions, University Advising, Educational Opportunity Program, Dog Days, Financial Aid, Scholarships, and other relevant campus departments to support the outreach and recruitment of low income, first generation and underrepresented students
  • In collaboration with the Director of Outreach and Special Programs develop and submit comprehensive reports periodically, or as deemed necessary, to the Director of Outreach and Special Programs.
    Secondary Duties of the job include:
  • Keep up-to-date regarding policies and procedures related to admissions, academic programs, general education and related university information
  • Help maintain accurate information on the Outreach and Special Programs website as it relates to Native American students
  • May collaborate with the Cross Cultural and Gender Center as deemed necessary and directed by OSP Director
  • Other duties as assigned

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of a university outreach, college, advising center, or similar department
  • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management
  • General knowledge of research and interview techniques
  • General knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior

    Ability to:
  • Interpret and apply program rules and regulations
  • Use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements
  • Obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews
  • Reason logically
  • Collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data
  • Advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required
  • Recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi aged value systems and work accordingly
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts
  • Rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned

    Education and Experience:
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field
    o Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis
  • Equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field
    o A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience

    Specialized Skills:
  • Possession of a valid, current Class "C" California driver's license and a good driving record
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours including evening and weekends, and travel on a regular and frequent basis as needed to meet programs objectives

    Preferred Skills:
  • Knowledge and understanding of Native American student academic needs and challenges to access higher education
  • Two years of student personal development and/or combined professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field (preference will be given to candidates with backgrounds in cultural competency training and demonstrated ability to work with the American Indian community)
  • Experience in the practices, procedures and administration of American Indian tribal groups, student development and student activities programs or closely related programs and services
  • Experience working with outreach or recruiting programs
  • Experience in event planning
  • Good communication, presentation, inter-personal and networking skills
  • Skilled in computer software, word-processing, power-point, excel, PeopleSoft, and social media

    Ability to:
  • Carry out a variety of assignments without detailed instructions
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals
  • Serve as a resource to high school and community college guidance counselors to keep them abreast of pre-admission information
  • Submit periodic reports and prospect information
  • Interface and work cooperatively with officials from school districts, the academic and administrative parts of the university, and local community colleges
  • Be detail oriented and organized to effectively plan events and workshops
