Position Summary:
The University of Idaho Library seeks an innovative, flexible, and highly collaborative Open Publishing Librarian who will help support and promote the open publishing services and infrastructure at U of I that are helping transform scholarly communication and teaching. Reporting to the Dean, this position will work within the Digital Scholarship and Open Strategies (DSOS) unit and closely collaborate across the library. In collaboration with the librarys Open Strategies Team, the Open Publishing Librarian will contribute to open initiatives such as the Open Access Publishing Fund, the Pressbooks platform, and the Think Open Fellowship program. They will provide expertise, guidance, and outreach for open publishing, and directly support projects and library fellowship programs for faculty and students. The open publishing librarian will collaborate with colleagues in the Center for Digital Inquiry and Learning (CDIL) on digital scholarship projects related to publishing, such as web development, metadata transformation, and open data work, with opportunities to explore and develop new static web approaches building on our CollectionBuilder initiative. They will collaborate with the Research Impact Team on the development and promotion of open publishing and open access opportunities related to VERSO, the U of Is institutional repository.

The successful candidate should be comfortable communicating the importance of open efforts and the use of technical platforms to a variety of partners, collaborators, and users. The ideal candidate will have an excellent attention to detail and a capacity to learn new skills and technologies, but need not be proficient in programming or systems. We are looking for someone who will take pride in the librarys innovative digital products and services, and who has the oral and written communication skills to express the importance of these assets to both the university community and communities outside the university.

As a faculty member, the open publishing librarian is expected to be engaged with and aware of developments in relevant fields and to maintain an active research and scholarship program.

This is a 12-month, fiscal year, tenure track faculty position. Faculty rank (assistant professor/ associate professor) is negotiable based on experience relative to university and library bylaws. Tenure status is not negotiable.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Masters degree from an ALA-accredited library program or the equivalent.
  • Experience using analytical, interpersonal, and oral and written communication methods.
  • Experience working effectively, independently, and collaboratively in a collegial environment.
  • Experience managing collaborative projects from beginning to end.
  • Experience learning new technologies associated with publishing and other digital library work.
  • Experience with explaining and promoting initiatives and platforms to people with varied levels of technical understanding.
  • Evidence of ability to learn new technologies and adapt to a changing technological environment.





Preferred Qualifications:
  • Evidence of scholarly engagement in the field of library or information sciences.
  • Demonstration of creativity or innovation in library services.
  • Experience with open publishing and open educational resources.
  • Experience with digital publishing platforms, such as Pressbooks.
  • Experience with creating, editing, and promoting open publications.
  • Experience with digital repository and research information platforms.
  • Interest, knowledge of and/or experience with markup (HTML), style sheet (CSS), and scripting (JavaScript) languages commonly used to develop websites.
