JOB OVERVIEW
The Metadata Analyst reports to the Technical Services Operations Manager. This position will address the immediate practical operational needs of our current environment for inventory, tracking, and discoverability of Library resources in all formats. This position will help develop a blueprint to prepare our existing MARC-based descriptive cataloging, classification, and subject analysis for a Linked Data environment. It will also advise on metadata for projects involving non-bibliographic data.

The Metadata Analyst will formulate strategies, help develop policies, identify processes and resources for the Library's comprehensive metadata needs. Directs or performs original metadata creation, metadata harvesting, revision, and enrichment for the scholarly output of our faculty, staff, and students. Advise on metadata projects and functions for the Library's internal and external stakeholders, such as library collaborations with projects involving clinical information systems and terminologies. Maintain appropriate metadata schemas, controlled vocabularies, and data dictionaries to facilitate access to resources. Ensure the accuracy and completeness of data in a variety of schema and recommend and implement structural and content corrections and enhancements to improve access and discoverability. The Metadata Analyst will lead the strategy for the adoption of new standards and vocabularies for the Library.

This position is expected to maintain currency in the areas of metadata and cataloging. The Library supports participation in conferences and development opportunities which will contribute to both individual professional development and the mission and goals of the Library and the University.

COLLECTION MANAGEMENT / LIBRARY
The Collection Management unit includes collection development, technical services, and scholarly communication. We perform activities related to the selection, acquisition, maintenance, preservation, discoverability, and open publishing models of scholarly resources for access by the UCSF community. Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area and five to seven years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Advanced professional knowledge of MARC and non-MARC cataloging rules, standards, and practices. This knowledge may be acquired through considerable library experience, possibly in combination with specialized training and skills or relevant academic preparation
Knowledge of library management systems and databases
Knowledge of library data transformation techniques and software tools. Experience with or understanding of scripting languages and/or tools for data manipulation (examples are Python, OpenRefine, XSLT, or others)
Recent cataloging experience in a variety of bibliographic and physical formats. Experience with cataloging tools and services available from bibliographic utilities
Experience in automating and streamlining metadata creation, analysis, and management using a variety of tools for metadata manipulation
Experience working with authority and entity data
Excellent interpersonal skills as demonstrated by the ability to interact with colleagues and library users in a consistently professional and helpful manner. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner with both technical and non-technical staff
Written and oral communication skills appropriate to the academic setting
Advanced analytical and problem solving skills to develop highly complex or specialized solutions

Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of the configuration and maintenance of services for providing access to electronic resources (such as authentication services, link resolvers, discovery layers)
Knowledge of MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) and NLM classification
Interest in clinical information systems and terminologies
