Position Description:

PURPOSE:

Under the (direct supervision) and day-to-day work direction of the Library Dean, the incumbent will oversee activities in the library makerspace, collaborate with key stakeholders in planning, organizing, and conducting programming, and coordinate the training and scheduling of student employees.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Provide day-to-day oversight for makerspace venue in library.

  • Provide for physical organization of the space
  • Maintain inventory and supplies
  • Maintain records of makerspace usage
  • Assure that all makerspace protocols are observed
  • Coordinate the makerspace schedule: oversee scheduling of workshops, classes, and open sessions

2. Ensure that all equipment is operated in safe and appropriate manner.

  • Train users on the safe use of equipment and processes

3. Create a repository of tutorials on using makerspace equipment Assist makerspace users in utilizing the space and equipment.

  • Assist faculty with incorporating use of makerspace into curriculum
  • Assist users with common technology challenges

4. Facilitate workshops and training opportunities for users including such areas as making, tinkering, innovation, problem based learning, design thinking, and rapid prototyping.

5. Provide day-to-day support for makerspace equipment, including 3D printers, laser cutters, scanners, kits, and other equipment.

  • Set up, maintain, and operate equipment in makerspace

6. Supervise work of student assistants.

  • Oversee a cohort of student Maker Leaders and facilitate their support roles in the space

7. Document and showcase projects created in the makerspace.

Other Functions:

  1. Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
  2. Participate in programs, services, library wide meetings, workgroups, and campus programs as needed and appropriate.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of and ability to interpret overall library policies and procedures and an in depth knowledge of library policies and procedures pertaining to assigned functional area, including a solid understanding of individual work functions and the ability to adapt work procedures. Thorough knowledge of institutions and librarys policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to information resources. Thorough knowledge of all aspects of lead work direction including assisting in employee selection, training employees in new work procedures, assigning work, organizing work flow and establishing priorities, reviewing work, providing input to performance evaluations and promoting teamwork to optimize effectiveness.

Skills: Full proficiency in all technical aspects of work assignments including a thorough knowledge of functional area policies and procedures and applicable work methods. Full proficiency in the use of makerspace equipment including 3D printers, laser cutters, and other fabrication equipment. Demonstrated problem solving and research skills to address standard and non-standard work problems. Strong written and verbal communication skills to be able to prepare internal reports and written and visual presentations on makerspace resources and present them to our user community. Strong organizational skills to oversee and lead work flow in assigned area.

Abilities: Ability to investigate and research more complex problems, including analyzing and interpreting information. Demonstrated expertise in using library makerspace materials and equipment, and the ability to connect makerspace activities with teaching and learning. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse, academic environment.

Minimum Qualifications:
Equivalent to a completion of a high school education or equivalent certification and three years of related library experience OR an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Specialized Skills:

  • Facility in using makerspace fabrication equipment such as 3D printers, CNC routers, laser cutters, and woodshop tools.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • A strong customer service attitude and commitment.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor degree preferred
  • Experience in makerspace-based design and fabrication using a range of materials and tools
  • Ability to set up, operate, and maintain makerspace fabrication devices, such as 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, and soldering stations.
  • Work experience in a makerspace designed for educational or community environments.
  • Experience supervising student workers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students
  • Demonstrated initiative and adaptability to change.
  • Ability to prioritize among many competing needs and projects with different timelines.
  • Experience working in a diverse and multicultural environment in an academic setting.
  • Technical fluency with Microsoft Office Professional Suite, Adobe Illustrator, CAD, and Google mail and calendaring programs.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMBs Vision.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Makerspace environment with standard design and maker fabrication equipment and tasks. Position requires ability to navigate maker environment and operate makerspace equipment. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
