We are searching for an experienced Laboratory Assistant, Tutorial Open Access Computer Laboratory (OACL) at our Santa Maria Campus facility.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

DEFINITION:

Incumbents in this position perform work under the supervision of the Dean, Academic Affairs. This position will perform a wide range of responsible technical and clerical duties related to the tutorial center and open access computer laboratory (OACL); value and promote the mission and vision of the college.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

The incumbent, under minimal supervision, performs technical and clerical support with a high degree of accuracy in planning, scheduling, organizing, and implementing students' tutorial and ARC services. Incumbents assist the ARC Coordinator and tutorial/OACL technician with a wide range of routine administrative services. In addition, there is a high frequency of contact with students, faculty, and staff requiring excellent judgment and customer service skills. Incumbents work with minimal supervision and make decisions to enforce ARC policies and procedures, and maintain a calm and efficient environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assists the ARC Coordinator and technician with implementing policies and procedures related to tutorial and OACL functions, utilizing online systems as needed.

Performs cash register transactions and prepare nightly deposits.

Assists ARC Coordinator and tutorial technician with budget and payroll functions, including reports.

Assists students and other users with tutorial applications, appointments, and other tutorial functions, utilizing online systems as needed.

Prepares correspondence and forms.

Assists lab users with technical problems and resolving conflicts related to the ARC guidelines.

Assists student workers, with oversight from the tutorial technician ARC Coordinator and.

Assists with room reservation and use, and secure area at closing.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Acts as a point person for Writing Center faculty when WC lab assistant is not available.

Desired start date is September 2019. This is a part-time, 16 hours per week, 10-month position

Work Schedule:

Monday - Thursday, 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Salary

  • The starting salary is $1,183 per month (range 13, $1,183 to $1,439 per month on the classified bargaining unit salary schedule).

    Bargaining unit employees whose regular work schedule requires work after 6:00 p.m. and before 6:00 a.m. for two (2) or more days per week shall receive a shift differential according to the following schedule:

    9.3.2 Two-and-one-half percent (2.5%) above their regular rate of pay for all hours worked provided the shift includes two (2) hours between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.

    Required Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Knowledge of:

    Computers, online scheduling systems, and Microsoft Office;

    Data entry, filing, and general office procedures;

    Principles, methods and practices of financial accounting and record keeping;

    Oral and written communication, including correct English usage;

    Office etiquette and customer service techniques, including telephone and online;

    Standard office equipment including faxes, copiers, and printers.

    Demonstrated Ability to:

    Operate a computer keyboard with accuracy and speed

    Understand and carry out oral and written directions with minimal supervision;

    Assist students and other users at a busy service counter, in person and on the telephone;

    Assist lab users with basic Microsoft Office and other standard lab applications;

    Establish and maintain records and files;

    Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work;

    Exercise initiative and good judgment in a variety of procedural situations;

    Perform financial and statistical clerical work, and keep accurate records.

    Education/Experience:

    An associate's degree in secretarial studies, office systems, or other related area; OR two years responsible clerical or administrative experience, preferably in an educational setting.

    Physical Demands:

    Typically may sit for extended periods of time;

    Operates a computer keyboard;

    Communicates over the telephone;

    Regularly lifts, carries, and/or moves objects weighing up to 10 pounds.

    Experiences interruptions while performing normal duties during the regular workday.
