Salary:
Anticipated Hiring Salary: $4,179 - $4,304 per month
Note: This is a full-time, probationary, exempt position.
Overview:
The International Student Advisor (SSP II), will provide advising and counseling services for international students and scholars. The International Student Advisor will be required to consistently exercise good judgment while maintaining a delicate balance between student advocacy and institutional compliance with federal regulations governing international students and exchange visitors, California State University system executive orders, and institutional policies and practices.
Position Summary:
The major duties of the job include:
Advise and counsel international students and exchange visitors on a wide range of issues including immigration, social and cultural adjustments, and academic plan and challenges
Organize, coordinate, and implement a wide range of high impact student service programs including but not limited to: International Coffee Hour, International Culture Night, International Student Orientation, International Commencement Celebration
Serve as a campus Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)
Assist with Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) registration, advising for reinstatement, leaves of absence, changes of status, authorizations, and terminations
Participate in the selection, training, and evaluation of International Student Ambassadors
Oversee the use of PeopleSoft data to identify student enrollment issues and students at risk of academic failure and coordinate advising efforts to address students' at risk factors
Initiate, research, and author International Website contents that meet a wide range of needs for prospective and current students
Initiate and monitor the use of electronic processes to streamline student services
Participate in international recruitment trips and the development of recruitment materials
The secondary duties of the job include:
Serve as an advocate for international students and international education on campus
Oversee the maintenance of student files, records and lists
Collaborate with various campus constituents to develop various immigration workshops for international students
Represent ISSP on various campus committees
Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of the practices, procedures, and activities of student services programs, including knowledge of organizing student programs and events
General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required.
Strong communication skills
Reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data
Effective outreach and presentation skills
Strong commitment and ability to provide friendly and efficient service to people from different cultures
Ability to:
o Communicate and work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds
o Interpret, apply and follow all applicable program and university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures
o Contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence"
o Effectively organize and manage multiple tasks in a fast paced team-oriented environment
o Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU Administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee and student advising and community contacts
o Use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program and service areas
o Serve as a resource to students, staff and the community in responding to inquiries and providing detailed information; collaborate with other campus staff regarding student advising, support services, academic and professional development resources, events and outreach activities.
A history of regular attendance and positive performance evaluations
Education and Experience:
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in the discipline of counseling.
o Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis
Equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field
o A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience
Preferred Skills:
Work experience with international students, or overseas work or study
One year of experience with student services and academic programs in a higher education setting
Familiarity with the CSU and CSU General Education requirements and Fresno State academic programs
Experience working with students in a leadership role
Familiarity with PeopleSoft Student Information System
