Position Description

This is a full-time, tenure track Communication Studies instructor position in the School of Language Arts. Under the direction of the Dean, the assignment for the full-service week will be to teach communication studies courses offered by the department and to participate in any other professional responsibilities as identified under 18.2.3 of the faculty agreement. Although the assignment is initially at the Rancho Campus, transfers to the Fontana or Chino campuses may be possible per contract and need.

Responsibilities

This assignment includes (but is not limited to) the following:
Teach assigned courses in a manner consistent with the department's standards and with the contents cited in the approved course outline of record.
Maintain professional and ethical standards;
Remain current in the subject matter areas and in the techniques of effective instruction.
Participate in department and committee work, curriculum and program development, community outreach, tutorial center, department website development, appropriate committee assignments, professional activities, and other duties necessary for the benefit of the students, the college, the community, and the profession; providing a safe and positive classroom environment conducive to effective learning;
Day and evening assignments at the College or any of the College Campuses may be required as part of the regular contract.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication, or organizational communication; OR
Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND a Master's degree in drama/theatre arts, mass communication, or English; OR
Possession of a valid Lifetime California Community College credential authorizing service as an instructor in Communication Studies; OR
The equivalent (District equivalency form must be submitted at the time of application);AND
Clear evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to those candidates who establish the highest level of professional competency as evidenced by any or all of the following:
Successful experience teaching communication studies at the community college level.
Expertise with the student populations included in theChaffey College Equity Plan. (Download PDF reader)
Recent experience teaching courses in non-traditional formats such as online, hybrid, fast-track, accelerated, etc.
A strong generalist background and teaching experience in the field of communication studies characterized by a balance between rhetorical theory and communication theory.
Teaching experience and/or academic background in the areas of public speaking, interpersonal communication, small group communication, logic and argumentation, oral interpretation of literature and/or reader's theatre.
Demonstrated effectiveness as a classroom instructor.
Familiarity with pedagogical technology.
Knowledge of diverse learning styles and teaching pedagogies.
A commitment to the mission of community colleges and to teaching at the community college level of higher education.

Additional Information

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Based upon the minimum and/or desirable qualifications stated in this position announcement, the initial salary placement range is $65,700 (minimum qualifications) to $93,700 (doctorate) (Fall 2019 salary schedule). Placement is based on the regular full-time faculty salary schedule and is dependent upon verification of relevant experience and coursework from a regional or nationally accredited institution of higher learning.
