Position Description

This is a full-time, tenure track chemistry instructor position in the School of Mathematics and Science. Under the direction of the Dean, the assignment for the full-service week will be to teach any chemistry courses offered by the department including (but not limited to) introductory chemistry, general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and to participate in any other professional responsibilities as identified under 18.2.3 of the faculty agreement. This assignment may include classes at the Rancho, Chino, and Fontana campuses as needed.

Responsibilities

This assignment includes (but is not limited to) the following:
  • Instruct classes in chemistry and related subjects, such as biochemistry and physical sciences, in accordance with the established course outlines of record. This includes organizing instruction towards achieving those objectives; participating in the selection of textbooks and other materials; instructing through lecture, discussion, demonstrations, etc.; conferring with students as appropriate; assigning grades; and providing a safe and positive classroom environment conducive to effective learning.
  • Maintain professional and ethical standards.
  • Remain current in all subject matter areas and in the pedagogical aspects of effective culturally responsive instruction.
  • Participate in the development, assessment, and evaluation processes of student learning outcomes.
  • Participate in department and college meetings and committee work, curriculum, program design and development, community outreach, student advisement, program review, and other duties necessary for the benefit of the students, the college, the community, and the profession.
  • Day, evening, or weekend assignments at the College or any of the College Campuses may be required as part of the regular contract.

    Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in chemistry; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or biochemistry AND aMaster's degree in biochemistry, chemical engineering, chemical physics, physics, molecular biology, or geochemistry; OR
  • Possession of a valid lifetime California Community College credential authorizing service as an instructor in chemistry; OR
  • The equivalent (equivalency questions are included in the Faculty Application for Employment); AND
  • Clear sensitivity and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
    Preference will be given to those candidates who establish the highest level of professional competency as evidenced by:
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching a wide variety of chemistry courses to science majors and non-majors at the college or secondary level with at least 2 years of teaching experience. Teaching experience in analytical chemistry, organic chemistry and/or instrumental analysis is desired.
  • Expertise with the student populations included in the Chaffey College Equity Plan.
  • Recent experience teaching courses in non-traditional formats such as online, hybrid, fast-track, accelerated, etc.
  • Demonstrated excellence at thoughtful, innovative curriculum design including hybrid and online curriculum and integrating modern educational technologies into the chemistry curriculum.
  • Demonstrated depth of knowledge and technical skills in a broad spectrum of modern chemistry subject matter and in the instrumentation used to teach this subject matter. Experience in operating and maintaining scientific instrumentation is desired.
  • A history of research activities or other professional activities that demonstrate ongoing active commitment to the scientific endeavor.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of procedures and protocols in safe handling of chemicals.
  • Demonstrated cooperative, organizational skill in managing laboratory classrooms.
  • Evidence of effective contribution to collaborative team effort in an diverse multiculturalacademic setting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to active involvement in the full range of professional and leadership roles expected of a community college professor.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the philosophy and mission of the community college.
  • Appreciation and respect for students and their role and responsibility in the learning process.
  • Evidence of proficiency in use of computers and commonly used software programs.

    Additional Information

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
    Based upon the minimum and/or desirable qualifications stated in this position announcement, the initial salary placement range is $65,700 (minimum qualifications) to $93,700 (doctorate) (Fall 2019 salary schedule). Placement is based on the regular full-time faculty salary schedule and is dependent upon verification of relevant experience and coursework from a regional or nationally accredited institution of higher learning.

    The Selection Process
