The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Instructor, Speech, De Anza College.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DE ANZA COLLEGE SPEECH PROGRAM:

The Speech Communication Department offers college level courses, which cover the areas of interpersonal, problem solving and critical reasoning in groups, public communication, and argumentation and rhetorical analysis. In addition, the department has developed many special interest courses, which add breadth to the program and support our Associate Degrees and Certificate in Speech Communication. Our courses allow students freedom within the curriculum to meet a variety of needs and goals including general education courses and requirements in a variety of major and certificate programs. The special interest courses include Interpersonal Communication, Organizational Communication, Intercultural Communication, and Facilitation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Teach all of our core courses through the praxis of equity, social justice, and multicultural education in ways relevant to the discipline of speech communication. Develop and integrate curricula with a commitment to making interdisciplinary connections. Help the college meet its commitment to information literacy as well as global, cultural, social, and environmental awareness.
  2. Assist the growth of students through preparation of course materials; effective student-centered teaching methodologies; cultural sensitivity; informed critical feedback on assignments, exams, presentations; and regular conference hours. Develop and assess program level and student learning outcomes. Collaborate with colleagues to develop state-of-the-art approaches to speech pedagogy and to develop curricula and new programs in our discipline.
  3. Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to serve on district and college committees and participate in campus extra-curricular activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  2. Master's Degree in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication, or organizational communication OR Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND Master's degree in drama/theater arts, mass communication, or English OR the equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Experience teaching the core courses such as Public Speaking, Fundamentals of Oral Communication, Argumentation and Rhetorical Analysis, Problem Solving and Critical Reasoning in Groups, Interpersonal, and Organizational Communication.
  2. Recent and relevant teaching experience at the secondary, community college, or college and university level.
  3. Experience in developing and/or assessing student learning outcomes.
  4. Experience and/or training in integrating technology into pedagogy and instruction.
  5. Experience and/or commitment integrating culturally inclusive pedagogy and practices for students from diverse backgrounds.
  6. Experience and/or commitment to working with a diverse division/team on implementing culturally inclusive practices and participating in dialogues on equity and social justice.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.
