Job Description

SUMMARY:

Under the direction of an assigned manager, coordinate and oversee the operation of instructional computer facilities; both networked and stand-alone environments; perform a variety of technical computer duties and provide technical expertise to facilitate the operations and use of instructional computer facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Coordinate and oversee the operation of instructional computer facilities to assure efficient and effective computer hardware and software operations.

Provide technical support, instruction and assistance to instructors and students in the resolution of hardware and software problems on college computers.

Provide technical expertise to personnel regarding the use of facilities and equipment, lab procedures and software availability; assist personnel in determining the uses and needs of computer systems.

Establish and maintain centralized software inventory.

Train and provide work direction to assigned hourly and student personnel; schedule personnel to assure proper lab coverage; participate in hiring and termination processes.

Diagnose network hardware and software problems and provide resolution.

Install and configure new workstations and stand-alone computers; install and connect network cards, cables, hubs, and other network equipment.

Evaluate performance and provide direction to assigned lab specialists for the operation of computer labs.

Coordinate the maintenance and replacement of lab, faculty, and staff equipment.

Coordinate the installation of software, hardware, and peripheral equipment.

Work with District Information Systems to resolve problems with hardware and district licensed
software

Provide remote dial-up and email support.

Maintain hardware inventory.

Troubleshoot hardware problems and perform minor repairs.

Maintain departmental area(s) in a safe, clean and orderly condition; assure compliance with established safety procedures and regulations.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

Evaluate and recommend the purchase of hardware and software for use in facility; recommend the purchase of new equipment and the replacement of obsolete equipment; update computer software.

Maintain support library of manuals, software and documents for use in the classroom and computer facilities by students and other users.

Install software; perform backups; manage print servers and other shared peripheral hardware.

Perform network maintenance and monitor usage; generate reports related to performance and usage.

Add network users; establish rights; modify network users; maintain network security.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Provide periodic reports.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Knowledge of modern network operating systems including Windows, Macintosh, and Unix.
  • Knowledge of LAN/WAN topologies, protocol, security procedures and specifications (Cisco experience preferred).
  • Principles, practices and techniques of modern computer networking.
  • Methods, equipment and materials used in the repair and maintenance of computers and computer network.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Operation capabilities and limitations of computers and peripheral equipment.


ABILITY TO:
  • Plan and organize network installation.
  • Identify software licensing issues in networked and non-networked environments.
  • Disseminate safety regulations involving computers and electrical equipment. Prepare and maintain appropriate network documentation.
  • Coordinate and oversee the operation of instructional computer facilities at a community college campus.
  • Work independently with little direction; plan and organize work to meet schedules and time lines.
  • Operate computers and peripheral equipment.
  • Analyze and schedule work to promote effective and efficient operations.
  • Evaluate new products and recommend usage.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Perform minor repairs and adjustments to computer equipment.
  • Analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.


EDUCATION:

Graduation from high school supplemented by two years of college-level course work in computer science or a related field.

EXPERIENCE:

Increasingly responsible experience in instructional computer labs, network administration, programming and/or operations.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Office and computer facilities environment.
