Illinois Small Business Development Center Business Advisor I-Quad Cities Campus

  • Responsibilities:
    Employees at this level provide free confidential business counseling and training to help business and student entrepreneurs and business owners start, grow, expand and sustain their businesses and when appropriate assist with succession planning.

    An Illinois Small Business Development Center Business Advisor will typically:
    1. Identify, support and help new and existing student and business entrepreneurs and existing businesses to grow and develop.
    2. Coordinate, organize, facilitate, and present workshops, training seminars, and other activities (including Rural Reverse Funding Fairs).
    3. Provide business advising to a diverse client group, with special emphasis on Disadvantaged Businesses as defined by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
    4. Develop and foster working relationships with financial institutions.
    5. Prepare and submit reports using State of Illinois directed CRM software
    6. Provide community outreach to 11 county region.
    7. Advise minority and underserved business communities.
    8. Identify training and educational needs for clients.
    9. Establish relationships with local chambers of commerce, economic development groups, units of government, and other stakeholder organizations as directed and suggested by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (IL DCEO).
    10. Assist clients with identifying and acquisition of venture capital.
    11. Assist clients with the acquisition of debt financing.
    12. Research, interpret, and review small business feasibility studies.
  • Required Qualifications:
    1. Bachelor's degree
    2. One consecutive year (12 consecutive months) small business ownership of which included:
      1. Must have decision making authority on all aspects of small business operation during the time of business ownership, including the ability to hire and fire employees.
      2. Direct, face to face, customer contact while owner of a small business

    Note: Employee in this position must obtain certification as a Certified Business Development Advisor through the Illinois Entrepreneur and Small Business Growth Association (IESBGA) within one year of employment.

    *Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1 year) of work experience.
  • Starting Salary: $55,704/yr
