The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking applicants for the position of Health Educator - Generalist with emphasis on Fitness for the Health Education unit of McKinley Health Center. McKinley Health Center is one of the nation's premiere student health centers, an accredited ambulatory care facility, providing primary care for 46,000 university students. We are seeking a dynamic, service oriented clinician for an exciting career in a college health setting. As part of the student health center, the unit provides a wide variety of health education, wellness promotion, fitness testing and sports promotion for students at the University of Illinois. The Health Educator works with a team of educators within the Health Education unit to promote a campus environment that supports health lifestyle behavior.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

CONSULTING and ADVISING:
1. Consults with appropriate McKinley Health Center staff on clinical and non-clinical health issues and provides referrals, as needed, on athletic injuries, fitness, diabetes, and asthma and ensures proper medical record filing/ documentation.
2. Consults and collaborates with MHC health educators, as well as the physical therapist, to provide services that include assessment, evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal systems and sports related injuries.
3. Uses exercise and physical activities to assess and treat patients for injury prevention and those at risk for chronic disease.
4. Provides individual appointments on fitness, athletic injuries and also designs clinical exercise programs for students with medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, hypertension, obesity and hyperlipidemia.
5. Conducts fitness testing, cardio-respiratory assessment, strength evaluation, and flexibility/body composition for UIUC general student population, including those with chronic health conditions and unsafe lifestyle behaviors.
6. Provides body composition testing through organized walk-in sessions or scheduled appointments.
7. Provides services within the scope of physician protocols for the assessment, treatment and reconditioning of athletic injuries.

EDUCATION:
1. Works with appropriate Registered Student Organizations to coordinate recreational activities including special programs, which include, but are not limited to, martial arts, Tai Kwan do, Judo, recreational dancing, etc.
2. Facilitates health and wellness programs with appropriate and identified campus and community organizations.
3. Coordinates, facilitates and organizes programs and campus-wide events that are designed to enhance healthy lifestyle practices among UIUC students and their families.
4. In consultation with appropriate units, individuals and groups within and outside MHC, utilized social media to bring awareness to fitness and athletic injuries.
5. Develop and utilized fitness videos to educate individuals and groups as deemed appropriate.
6. Develops, implements and evaluates educational programs based on needs assessment for exercise physiology, general fitness, athletic/musculoskeletal injury, self-care and substance abuse.
7. Collaborates with appropriate MHC units and selected campus units and organizations to provide services on respiratory illnesses, fitness, exercise physiology, health risks, and general wellness.
8. Provides in-service education for MHC staff regarding athletic injuries, fitness, chronic illnesses, obesity treatment and prevention techniques.
9. Ensures a safe and clean facility by monitoring equipment, scheduling maintenance on fitness equipment and maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies.
10. Evaluates various programs and when appropriate, makes adjustments. Works with appropriate personnel to design, implement and evaluate identified health risks in the areas of general wellness and safety prevention services.
11. Contributes to the professional growth of MHC, Health Education/SportWell and, whenever possible, participates in professional conferences and workshops.
12. Plans, implements, and evaluates outreach programs.
13. Serves as a campus resource person for information on various health fields, especially on those related to athletic injuries, fitness, respiratory illnesses, diabetes and obesity.

ADMINISTRATION:
1. Supervises and directs graduate assistants, student interns and others, as assigned.
2. Documents records of students seen, programs presented and work in progress.
3. Serves on MHC and Student Affairs committees as deemed necessary by MHC Administration.
4. Provides verbal and written reports on request.
5. Responsible and accountable to support and ensure a culture of safety, quality and risk management including compliance with ethics.
6. Assumes appropriate related additional duties to further the mission of the unit.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A Master's Degree is required, with preference in Public Health, Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, Sports Medicine, Athletic Training or related field. Certification as an Athletic Trainer and licensed or license eligible, in the State of Illinois is preferred. ACSM Health and Fitness instructor or ACSM Exercise Specialist is preferred. A minimum of two year's experience working as a health educator, athletic trainer or fitness educator is required. Clinical experience with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, hyperlipidemia and obesity is preferred.

Possess sound knowledge, skill and demonstrated ability to develop, implement and evaluate programs and individual appointments in a variety of settings. Possess good computer skills, excellent verbal and written skills and the ability to conduct literature search.

Salary is competitive and includes an attractive, comprehensive benefits package. This is a full time, 12 month appointment. Starting date is negotiable.
