The Fire Protection Technology Department at Mission College is now accepting applications for a full-time, tenure-track instructor who shares our excitement for teaching and our commitment to excellence in education. Under the general direction of the CE Dean and/or Department Chair, the Fire Protection Technology Instructor/Fire Academy Coordinator provides comprehensive classroom instruction to students from diverse backgrounds for the purpose of facilitating the attainment of their academic or vocational objectives. In addition, the Fire Protection Technology Instructor/Fire Academy Coordinator coordinates the activities of the Fire Academy.

Assignment:
This is a full-time, 10-month, tenure-track position that begins in Fall 2019. Assignment may include late afternoon, evening, and weekend courses. This position is represented by the West Valley-Mission Federation of Teachers (WVMFT / AFT Local 6554).

The instructional assignment is in the discipline of Fire Technology with a special emphasis on teaching fire academy courses, Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) classes, as well as California State Fire Marshal courses. The instructor must meet both the minimum qualifications as established by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors for service in the Fire Technology discipline and be an Instructor 1 with California State Fire Training within nine months of appointment.

Salary and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range:

  • $64,631 to $100,582 annually, based upon academic achievement, teaching and related experience (Academic Salary Schedule, Steps 1-9).

Minimum Qualifications:

1.Education Possess one of the following:

  • Any bachelors degree or higher and two years of professional experience; OR
  • Any associate degree and six years of professional experience; OR
  • A valid California Community College Instructors Credential in the discipline.

AND

2. Understanding of, and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.

ADDITIONAL LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Candidates must be a registered Fire Instructor 1 with California State Fire Training, within nine months from appointment.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to obtain and maintain additional teaching certifications as required relating to California State Fire Marshall and/or California State Training Institute.


Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
Instructional duties and assignments may consist of one or more of the following:

  • Provide instruction for assigned courses. This includes preparation, in-class activities, evaluation of students work, consultation with students outside of class (scheduling time beyond normal office hours if necessary), ensuring regular effective student contact for Distance Education courses, maintenance of currency in the subjects taught and other efforts related to the teaching of the assigned classes, and participate in the process of SLO assessment and evaluation and use the results of these assessments in the process of continuously improving student learning.
  • Maintain accurate class and other records.
  • Submit, when due, all necessary reports, such as attendance, grade reports, rosters, class and office schedules.
  • File a syllabus for each course with the appropriate division offices.
  • Post and maintain office hours each week.
  • Provide each student with a current course syllabus as required by Title 5, which includes SLOs, classroom procedures, requirements and grading policies and provide a copy to the Division Office.
  • Refer students to appropriate college resources.
  • Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the members area of expertise.
  • Assume institutional responsibilities, essential to the ongoing operation and effective achievement of department, division, college and district programs.

Additionally, the Fire Protection Technology Instructor/Fire Academy Coordinator will coordinate academy activities which include fire academy graduation, professional expert assignments, state certifications, academy applications, academy orientation, skills labs, propane burn, family day, academy accreditation standards, employment opportunities, simulation room activities, and any other academy related activities as appropriate.
