Essential Functions:
The primary purpose of this position is to operate and control campus-wide heating system and related mechanical systems. This includes the central heating plant, other boilers, fuel system, and hot water piping throughout the campus as well as. This position is responsible for ensuring the proper operations, maintenance and repair of the steam and hot water producing and distribution plant at NCCU. System operates 360 days a year, with 5 days set-side for federal/state inspections and repair. This position is responsible for all steam and steam-driven equipment on campus. The system includes boilers (11 currently), generators, fuel lines, fuel (natural gas and fuel oil), pumps, steam and water valves, air compressors, condensation systems, chemical treatment systems, pneumatic systems, 3 campus-wide piping systems (for condensate, domestic hot water, and steam), gauges, pumps, exchanges, blowers and other instruments and related equipment that comprise a recycling system of water to steam to water at the optimal 100 PSI across the campus. The system encompasses all controls in building mechanical rooms that use steam and hot water. This position ensures that systems are monitored and inspected constantly and equipment adjusted to avoid malfunctions and ensures that the equipment is operating within set operation ranges. Work involves quality assurance, valve, pump and pipe repair, gauge calibration, boiler repair and operation, chemical analysis, precision measuring, system controls, hydrostatic testing, trouble-shooting, and problem solving.

This position may provide information to university administration, staff, and students. Request for information will often involve interpretation of university policies; related mechanical systems.

Minimum Education/Experience:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s). Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The successful candidate must possess a working knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of high pressure steam-generation, condensation and distribution systems and general knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems; ability to operate electronic controls, power tools and hand tools; ability to lift up to 50 pounds, wear a full or half-face respirator, climb a ladder, and crawl in confined spaces; ability to work independently with little or no supervision; to take initiative to see projects and assignments through to completion; to learn, interpret and analyze information to make necessary decisions; to exercise judgment and discretion in problem solving; to plan, prioritize and organize workflow; ability to work flexible schedules; excellent analytical and organizational skills along with written and oral communication skills. A valid drivers license is required.
