Job Description:
APPOINTMENT: July 1, 2020

RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Provost, the Executive Director for International Affairs implements and oversees work carried out by the offices of study abroad, international recruitment and outreach, Westerns' English as a Second Language (WESL), and international student services. In addition, the Executive Director coordinates initiatives with university leadership and works closely with undergraduate and graduate admissions, the financial aid and scholarships office, other administrative units, as well as all colleges, academic units, and centers that have international components. The Executive Director for International Affairs is charged with collaboratively developing a strategic plan for international affairs within the context of the university's vision, mission, values, and strategic planning process and is responsible for effective operations that enhance the international profile and reputation of the university by increasing the number of international students attending WIU, supporting the success of international students enrolled at WIU, and developing a wide array of programs, experiences, and strategic partnerships that promote globalization within the university community.
Opportunities in this job include:
Planning and implementing initiatives for enrollment growth in both established markets for WIU (India and Nigeria) as well as new markets and regions across the globe;
Bringing innovation to our ESL program and considering pathway programs for ESL;
Implementing a new vision for our Study Abroad program and working with academic departments to increase the number of our study abroad students;
Leading the student services program we have at WIU for international students, and working closely with housing and dining, financial aid, as well as the communities of Macomb and Moline and initiating projects in these communities like a homestay program, community fairs and luncheons, etc.

Requirements:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A Master's degree;
Successful operational experience with at least two of the following: study abroad administration/management; international student recruitment; employment processing and supporting international students, faculty, or staff; intensive English or second language acquisition programs; other international activities;
Excellent written and oral communication skills;
Effective planning and collaboration with stakeholders;
Experience working with diverse student population;
Effective fiscal management;
Experience with immigration documents including 1-20, H-1B, F and J Visas
Experience with risk management and emergency management protocols associated with education abroad;
US Citizen/Permanent Resident
Willingness to travel.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Terminal degree;
Prior experience as a director of international affairs or similar unit;
Administrative experience, including supervision of staff, at a large, public university;
Experience securing external grant funding or philanthropic funding;
Foreign language proficiency;
Ability to evaluate international transcripts;
Ability to travel extensively overseas;
Demonstrated innovation.

WIU-Macomb, IL (Student Population: 6,432): A traditional, residential four-year campus with offering a comprehensive slate of undergraduate and graduate programs, including a doctorate in education, WIU-Macomb is located in the heart of west central Illinois in Macomb (population 20,000). Amtrak provides twice-daily service from Macomb to Chicago (and point in-between).
Macomb is located approximately 75 miles from the Quad Cities International Airport (Moline, IL) and 70 miles from the Greater Peoria Regional Airport (Peoria, IL).

WIU-Quad Cities (Student Population: 1,192): The only public university in the Quad Cities area, WIU-QC offers select undergraduate and graduate programs, including a doctorate in education and a doctorate in environmental studies, at its metropolitan, non-residential campus in Moline, IL.
