Director of the Doctoral (Ed.D.) Program in Educational Leadership
The Reich College of Education at Appalachian State University invites applications for the position of Director of the Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership. This is a 12-month administrative and teaching appointment, reporting directly to the Dean of the Reich College of Education. Qualified candidates should have an established record of scholarship, teaching, and service sufficient to qualify for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in one of the five departments within the College. Further, qualified candidates will have a developed philosophy of inclusion and social justice in leadership and administration. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Doctoral Program at Appalachian State University awards the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) and prepares leaders for a range of positions in public education (pre-K–12), higher education, and other professional arenas. The Ed.D. program is comprised of six concentrations: Educational Administration; Educational Leadership–Interdisciplinary Studies; Higher Education Administration; Literacy in Exceptionalities; Expressive Arts Education, Leadership, and Inquiry, and; Instructional Technology Leadership. This program is a member of the Carnegie Project for the Education Doctorate (CPED), and graduates are expected to become change agents in making educational systems more effective, more equitable, and more sustainable. The program encourages critical thinking, analytic rigor, and creative collaboration to address the complex and interconnected challenges of our time. The program currently serves approximately 85 students and employs a cohort model on campus in Boone, North Carolina, off-campus at two regional sites, and online (beginning in Fall 2019).

Qualifications
The successful candidate for this position will have:
  • An earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. from an accredited university with expertise in educational leadership or one of the six concentrations offered by the program;
  • Significant leadership and administrative experience in pre-K–12, higher education, or a closely related field, including proven managerial and fiscal responsibilities;
  • A demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence and social justice through scholarship, teaching, and service;
  • An ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, build relationships with a wide variety of partners and constituents, and recruit potential students;
  • An understanding of academic culture, policies, and procedures typical of major universities;
  • Experience advising at the doctoral level, including leadership roles on dissertation committees;
  • Strong background in, and understanding of, a wide variety of research methodologies;
  • A record of research and teaching appropriate for membership on the graduate faculty (http://www.graduate.appstate.edu/facultystaff/gradfaculty/); and
  • Evidence of a commitment to the philosophies outlined in the RCOE Conceptual Framework (https://rcoe.appstate.edu/about/mission-vision-and-conceptual-framework/).

    Preferred qualifications include:
  • Qualification for appointment at the rank of Full Professor;
  • Experience with hybrid and online teaching using contemporary, computer-based educational delivery systems and a familiarity with distance learning trends and best practices;
  • Demonstrated success in obtaining external funding, and;
  • Experience advising and mentoring students from a distance.

    Responsibilities
    The responsibilities of the Director include the continued development, implementation, and daily operations of the Doctoral Program; policy development; budget planning and oversight; overseeing quality dissertation scholarship; teaching doctoral-level courses; recruitment of doctoral students; building relationships with concentration area faculty; representation of the Program within and outside the Reich College of Education and Appalachian State University; and collaboration with other departments, colleges, and programs, as needed. The Director will be expected to assume leadership in setting program priorities and standards.
