Position Summary:
Willamette University invites applications for a full-time exempt Director of Campus Recreation.

The Director of Campus Recreation is primarily responsible for providing a wide-range of recreational activities for the Willamette community. Involves a significant level of contact with students, faculty and staff, as well as individuals and organizations outside of the University. The Director must be present, highly visible and accessible as a student program resource and staff supporter of student events; as such some evening and weekend work is required. The Director of Campus Recreation may be required to travel locally in the performance of his or her job functions.

This position is eligible for the University's generous benefits package that includes: medical/dental insurance, sick accruals (prorated), and contribution of 10% of gross base pay from the University in exchange for a mandatory contribution of 1% by the employee.

Duties & Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Director of Campus Recreation include, but are not limited to, the following functions, which are not listed in any particular order of importance or significance:

1. Advises a full range of intramural activities through the supervision of student intramural supervisors and referees.
2. Oversees a multifaceted outdoor program, including the hiring of staff, outdoor protocols, staff training processes, gear procurement and rentals, trip logistics, transportation procurement and safety, and budget processes.
3. Provides management to Sparks Athletic Center operations including facility oversight of the fitness center, pool and multipurpose rooms. Responsible for staffing, scheduling, and coordinating of facilities as well as purchasing and maintaining all fitness equipment. Oversees a comprehensive wellness program; including developing programs to meet student, faculty and staff needs and hiring qualified fitness instructors, wellness program student leaders, personal trainers, and fitness center staff. Manages the aquatics program, including hiring, training, and supervising lifeguards; scheduling the pool and open swim times; and engaging students, faculty, staff, and outside users in the pool. Oversees Sparks Athletic Center membership management.
4. Coordinates the incoming student outdoor pre-orientation program, Steppin Out, in collaboration with the Offices of Multicultural and Community Service Learning.
5. Supervises and provides professional development opportunities for the Campus Recreation Coordinator, a full-time hourly employee.
6. Oversees concussion, liability, travel, emergency, and risk management protocols for all sport club activities. Assists with advising and support for recognized sport clubs and student organizations as required.
7. Responsible for hiring of students in leadership positions for various recreational organization and roles.
8. Oversees the management of Bike Shop operations including short and long term rentals, bike repair, and bike trips.
9. Manages Montag Center, including operations and programming.
10. Manages campus recreation budgets.
11. Oversees the departmental marketing and communication plan, including website, social media, the Toilet Paper (regular program communication), email, and all other advertisement and communications.
12. Works closely with the Athletic Department on scheduling, conferences, and camp schedules and coverage of facilities. Meets regularly with Assistant Director of Athletics-Facilities & Operations.
13. Serves on various University committees as needed.
14. Serves as a member of the Student Involvement Team and other Student Affairs and University committees.
15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Information/About the Department:


Required Qualifications:
1. Masters degree in recreation management, sports administration, student affairs or related field required.
2. Five years of experience creating and implementing recreational activities required. Experience working in higher education recreation programs.
3. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills are essential, as well as the ability to effectively establish relationships internally and externally; excellent written and verbal communication skills. Supervisory skills.
4. Excellent time-management and organizational skills with experience in program management and strategic planning.
5. Strong proficiency in the use of a computer for communications, data management, data reporting, and budget review and analysis; including Microsoft Office and Google platform. Ability to learn and adapt quickly to new software.
6. Ability to interpret and explain policies, procedures, and programs
7. Ability to develop, propose, and manage budget matters regarding the operation of the Campus Recreation Department.
8. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relations with other staff, faculty, and students. Proven record of teamwork and collaboration. Ability to effectively interact with a wide variety of people in a manner that positively portrays the University and its programs, personnel, and philosophies.
9. Knowledge of and experience in designing and implementing intramural, outdoor, wellness, and/or sport club activities required.
10. Demonstrated understanding of legal liability issues related to recreational activities required.
11. Knowledge of and ability to design and implement creative, campus-wide recreational programs.
12. Ability to provide knowledge, training and emphasis of safety and risk management in all areas of recreational programming.
13. Proficient in several computer programs,

Demonstrated commitment to social justice, inclusion and equity with experience in providing support and advocacy for diverse communities (includes but not limited to race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability, gender, gender identity, gender expression, and socioeconomic status.), particularly as they relate to student leadership development and student engagement.
15. Ability to effectively interact with a wide variety of people in a manner that values diversity and positively portrays the University and its programs, personnel, and philosophies.
16. Knowledge of and ability to promote the development of leadership skills in the undergraduate student population.
17. Ability to collaborate with other university programs.
18. Ability to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
19. Knowledge of issues and trends in collegiate recreational programs.
20. Ability to work a flexible work schedule.
20. Must possess and maintain a current drivers license valid in the State of Oregon and a driving record insurable by the Universitys insurer.
21. Successful clearance of a criminal conviction records check.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Red Cross, lifeguard and/or personal training certifications or similar training/education.
