General Responsibilities:

Under the direction and supervision of the Vice President of Student Services or an assigned manager provide a wide range of outreach, counseling and retention services to a diverse student population. Work directly with students participating in the College Promise program to provide holistic wrap-around services to support student equity and student success. Serve students in the Men of Color program, and in collaboration with the Division, develop a process that recruits and retains students from underrepresented and underserved populations. Assist students from early outreach to college transition and transfer to a four-year institution; this includes high school outreach and recruitment, community outreach, orientation, educational planning, summer enrichment programs, academic coaching, follow up, and transfer planning. Perform core counseling functions including academic, career, and personal counseling and other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In accordance with the College Promise (AB19) and Student Equity and Achievement (SEA) Program, counselors will deliver a wide range of services that support student equity and success, including but not limited to, outreach and recruitment, counseling and advising, educational planning, and follow-up. Assist College Promise eligible students in determining and achieving academic, vocational, and personal objectives.

Assist Promise students in clarifying academic goals, selecting a major and educational planning for transfer, associate degree and certificate programs. Liaison with Financial Aid and Admission & Records to assess students with program eligibility. Develop and implement intake and follow-up procedures for students for the program. Participate in outreach functions that may include serving as a liaison with high schools, community-based organizations and four-year colleges/universities. Develop intervention and retention strategies to ensure student success. Establish an effective rapport with students. Serve as liaison with other student services and instructional divisions and programs on campus. Refer students as appropriate to campus and community resources and services. Conduct Promise Program orientations and coordinate summer transition program. Maintain assigned caseload of students. Collect retention, priority registration activities, course completion, and/or transfer data to report to campus administrators and the District.

The delivery of services would occur both on- and off-campus in multiple ways: in-person, on-line, individual and group meetings, workshops and other innovative ways.

Assist students in clarifying academic goals and selecting a major and establishing/maintaining enrollment priority. Establish a rapport with students; monitor and track students' academic progress to ensure attainment of educational goal; maintain contact with students throughout their enrollment; and use an early alert system to ensure student persistence and success. Take students to field trips, career, leadership and enrichment events and conferences. Establish and maintain contact with K-12 and university partners. Develop other relevant liaisons and networks with on- and off-campus programs and agencies.

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attendance at department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, and performing other duties consistent with the role of a Counselor. Counselors also have the opportunity to serve on District and college committees and shared governance groups.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Ability to:
  1. Ability to serve as a liaison and network with on and off campus programs and agencies.
  2. Ability to develop and provide trainings for faculty and staff.
  3. Ability to demonstrate excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and facilitation skills both in-person and on-line.

Knowledge of:
  1. Knowledge of and the skills to provide services to multiethnic, international and underrepresented students.
  2. Knowledge of and experience with computers, software, and technology related to counseling.
  3. Knowledge of and experience in establishing and maintaining linkages with instructional divisions and special programs.
  4. Knowledge of and experience in consensus building within a diverse educational environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  2. Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling OR the equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Ability and willingness to work with underrepresented student groups and prospective students in high schools.
  2. Coursework or training related to cross-cultural perspectives.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Environment:
  1. Indoor, office environment. Occasionally in the environment where students' meet and congregate.
  2. Willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include summer, evening, weekend, on- and off-campus assignments.

Physical Abilities:
  1. Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
  2. Vision sufficient to read various materials.
  3. Dexterity of hands and fingers to perform the tasks required of the position.
  4. Regularly stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time.

  7. Lifting and carrying objects up to 20 lbs.

HIRING RANGE: $62,772.00 - $103,094.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience.
