Job Description

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Public & Media Relations, this position helps execute communications strategies that support college initiatives, programs, events and activities. The following duties are including, but not limited to:
  • Conducting proactive communications efforts that highlight student, faculty and staff achievements and promoting the diverse array of college departments and programs; that includes regularly posting on and monitoring the college's approved social media channels, scheduling content and coordinating the social media aspects of ongoing communications campaigns and pitching stories to local and national media outlets via press releases and media advisories
  • Responsible for writing and editing institutional publications/messaging as well as assisting in the review and revision of departmental content to ensure quality and brand consistency
  • Responsible for coordinating and arranging content for the college's radio program, and will assist with conducting research for institutional press releases, news alerts and articles as well as ensure that college news and events are known internally
  • Expected to regularly attend college campus events and publicize them through social media channels via photographs and/or videos
  • Works closely with communications coordinators and ambassadors in the department, other departments and on other campuses to ensure development and communication of a consistent message and the timely publication of associated materials.


Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, English, journalism or related field with 4 years combined experience in public relations, communications, English, journalism or related field OR any bachelor's degree with at least 6 years of combined experience in public relations, communications, marketing and/or journalism OR a 2-year degree in public relations, communications, English, journalism or related field with at least 8 years of relevant public relations or communications experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing communications strategies in order to communicate complex subject matter to a variety of audiences
  • Experience writing, proofreading and editing for the preparation and finalization of a wide range of materials including press releases, media advisories, newsletters, magazine stories, marketing content and other materials
  • Skilled in social media platforms and messaging, and an understanding of current trends in social/digital media
  • History working collaboratively with marketing and communications staff to maintain strategic communication plans and support diverse internal communications needs.
  • Experience coordinating communications in higher education
  • Skilled in MS Office and WordPress or related news/blog software
  • Experience with writing in Associated Press Style
  • Experience managing communications during crisis or emergency scenarios
  • Experience with graphic design and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience in photography / videography
