Essential Functions:
The ideal candidate will share the Madera Community College Center's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. We currently enroll over 5,000 students of which 66% are Latinx, 1% are Filipino, 6% are Asian, 3% are Black/African American, 19% are White, 1% American Indian/Alaska Native, and 3% are multiracial. MCCC is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.
Reporting to the Dean of Student Services at the Madera Community College Center, the College, Career & Transfer Counselor will cover a full range of general counseling responsibilities including academic, career, transfer and personal counseling to a diverse student population. The counselor will be responsible for:
  • Providing comprehensive counseling services and coordination of career/transfer activities for new and transfer students;

  • Assisting in the organization and implementation of matriculation activities, such as orientation, assessment, counseling and follow-up services;

  • Assisting students in major selection, developing student education plans (SEPs), and facilitating career exploration and transfer program activities related to their educational goals and career pathways;

  • Assisting in the development and provision of transfer activities and assignments for the Madera/Oakhurst Community College Centers, including identifying the transfer student population and providing ongoing communication regarding the programs and services sponsored by the Career/Transfer Program through email, letters, flyers, newsletter, and social media;

  • Assisting in the development, implementation of the college, career & transfer services, including classroom visits targeting transfer-oriented classes, faculty presentations on four-year degree programs, and workshops on such topics as general transfer information, UC transfer majors and pathways, and CSU transfer degree programs;

  • Working collaboratively with the college articulation officer with recommendations regarding course-to-course and program-to-program articulation agreements;

  • Supporting the college's articulation program, policies and procedures as directed by the California Education Code, California State University (CSU), University of California (UC) regulations and standards, and the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office Curriculum Review and Committee Guidelines and Standards;

  • Maintaining, disseminating, and providing in-service to all counselors on the use of TAG's (Transfer Agreement Guarantee);

  • Maintaining the Career & Transfer Program website and providing published and online resources;

  • Planning and implementing the annual career/transfer activities and other campus events;

  • Monitoring the career and transfer budget in consultation with the Dean of Student Services;

  • Assisting with the preparation of the annual program review, student learning outcomes, direct reports, and evaluations;

  • Assisting in developing programs and student support services that will improve student access to college, increase student retention and completion rates;

  • Working collaboratively and in coordination with instructional faculty, staff, and administrators in the development of student success initiatives and provision of counseling in support of guided pathways and other programs, including but not limited to first year experience programs and Summer Bridge;

  • Providing assistance and referrals to on-campus resources and student support services including Admissions & Records, EOP&S, CalWORKs, DSP&S, Financial Aid, Student Success Centers, STEM, TRiO, Veterans and off-campus community resources;

  • Providing assistance to new and prospective students with college applications and college orientation;

  • Developing and facilitating individual and group workshops to local high schools and community agencies;

  • Teaching counseling courses such as career planning, academic success and college introduction;

  • Serving on college-wide committees and attending faculty meetings, as necessary to support and enrich college programs and activities, and participating in student success initiatives;

  • Complying with District policies and procedures in the performance of all duties;

  • Assignments includes Monday - Friday, some evenings and Saturdays may also be required; and

  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Masters in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling;

    OR

  • A valid California Community College Credential;

    OR

  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency);

    AND

  • All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.
(NOTE: a bachelors degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience providing academic, career, transfer, and personal counseling at a community college;
  • Experience in developing Student Education Plans (SEPs) for community college students;
  • Experience developing and implementing programs and services associated with community college transfer centers, career centers and general counseling services;
  • Knowledge of California Community College matriculation process;
  • Knowledge of ASSIST and other online Transfer/Counseling and articulation resources;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Title V state-mandated Transfer Center guidelines and mandates;
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and implement Career/Transfer projects and special events;
  • Proficiency and currency with personality and career assessment tools and related software applications, their administration and interpretation;
  • Experience addressing educational barriers of low-socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff;
  • Experience with technology pertaining to student data collection within student services;
  • Experience in developing and presenting college and/or university workshops;
  • Experience participating in outreach and matriculation activities on/off campus;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity;
  • Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.


Conditions of Employment:
177-181 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary is $54,029 $81,342 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,021 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:
Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement. From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents, a selection committee will determine the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications. They will be invited to interview. The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the ecommended candidates. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President and College President for final interviews. A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
