Position Summary:
Willamette University is accepting applications for Chemical Hygiene Officer/Chemistry Laboratory Stockroom Manager. General supervision is received by CLA Associate Dean for Faculty Development; Works closely with the Chemistry Department Chair and University Safety Education Officer.

The person in this position will have two essential functions: (1) oversee the development and implementation of best practices pertaining to chemical hygiene and laboratory operations while ensuring compliance with Federal and State regulations; and (2) manage the chemistry stockroom as per job description below.

This is a full-time, exempt,year round position. This position is eligible for the University's generous benefits package that includes: medical/dental insurance, sick and vacation accruals, contribution of 10% of gross base pay from the University in exchange for a mandatory contribution of 1% by the employee, tuition remission, and holidays.

Salary is dependent on experience and education.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Academic Chemical Hygiene Officer

Oversee development and implementation of chemical hygiene plans (CHP) for the academic departments at Willamette University in coordination with the University safety officer. Monitor and ensure compliance with Federal and State (Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ)) regulations along with university policy and best management practices pertaining to chemical hygiene and laboratory operations. Maintain and distribute current information regarding legal requirements associated with chemical and biological hazards in the workplace. Manage chemical waste disposal for all academic departments.

Oversee all Chemical Hygiene activities for academic departments, including: Chemistry, Biology, Earth Science, Physics, Exercise Science, Art, Theater, and the Hallie Ford Museum of Fine Art.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

1. Develop programs and associated training for faculty, staff, and students in safe use of chemicals and laboratory practices. Depending on the subject matter and audience, this training may be performed annually, each semester, or otherwise as needed.
2. Develop and implement appropriate chemical hygiene policies and practices; Maintenance of Chemical Hygiene Plan and compliance with the OSHA Laboratory Standard. Assists with campus hazard communication plan.
3. Maintenance of Hazardous Chemical Waste Management Plan in conjunction with the University Safety Education Officer.
4. Development and maintenance of Safe Operating Procedures for use of chemicals and equipment in teaching and research laboratories.
5. Regular inspection of laboratories (teaching and research) and other areas within the College of Liberal Arts which use chemicals in daily practice.
6. Maintain database and prepare periodic reports of chemicals stored within academic departments.

7. Review and interpret all inventory information and ensure that SDS are distributed for all new chemicals.

8. Manage the purchase, storage and disposal of hazardous materials for academic departments including arranging proper storage.

9. Maintain required records for chemical waste and its disposal.

10. Develop, implement, and maintain a hazardous waste reduction program in coordination with the University Safety Education Officer.

11. Maintain stock of safety equipment for use in laboratories and studios.

12. Issues regular reports on campus compliance with chemical handling regulations and safety protocols.

13. Familiarity with OSHA regulations pertaining to college-level laboratory safety and laboratory management; OSHA and Department of Homeland Security regulations and right-to-know policies pertaining to chemical inventory and labeling; and EPA regulations pertaining proper storage of chemicals and disposal of hazardous waste.

14. Must be willing to seek training and/or certification and attend relevant conferences to stay abreast of new requirements.

Chemistry Stockroom Manager

The Laboratory and Stockroom manager ensures that the chemistry department stockroom is maintained as a safe, efficient, and organized storeroom for chemicals and other materials used by the chemistry department teaching and research labs.

The duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following functions, which are not listed in any particular order of significance:

1. Prepares solutions and laboratory setups; places reagents, equipment and supplies in the laboratories as needed for each teaching lab. Removes used items at the end of each lab experiment and restocks as necessary.
2. Orders, receives, and maintains records for chemicals, supplies, and instrumentation.
3. Supervises 2-3 student stockroom assistants.
4. Supervises check-in and check- out procedures every semester and lab cleanup at the end of the year.
5. Maintains records of departmental equipment, chemicals and apparatus on hand.
6. Maintains Safety Data Sheets for all chemicals.
7. Ensures the safe storage, correct handling and proper disposal of chemicals.
8. Assists the department chair in ordering and receiving new supplies and equipment, and in maintaining departmental financial records.
9. Maintains first aid and other safety equipment and practices in accordance with Federal, State, and Local regulations.
10. Provide instruction or training workshops on practical and regulatory aspects of safety and health in a studio/laboratory setting.
11. Remain current on industry standards.
12. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Additional Information/About the Department:


Required Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in an appropriate science discipline, plus at least one year of relevant technical experience, OR a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills were acquired.
Thorough knowledge of laboratory chemicals and chemical hygiene practices.
Proficiency using standard desktop computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheet, and willingness to learn new software.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required.
Possess strong organizational, time management and prioritization skills and able to balance and meet competing deadlines.
Strong interpersonal, supervisory and administrative skills.
Demonstrated effective written, oral and presentation skills.
Ability to provide support to faculty in planning and coordinating labs.
Ability to work independently as well as establish and maintain harmonious relations with other staff, faculty and students.
Ability to safely lift 40-50 lbs. regularly.
An employer-paid pre-employment physical required.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Masters degree in chemistry, environmental health & safety, or other fields that provide a combination of education and experience of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
2. Certification as Chemical Hygiene Officer.
3. Certification as Hazardous Materials Manager.
4. Previous laboratory and stockroom experience.
