Job Description

Nevada State College (NSC) invites applications for the position of Career Advisor for Juniors, Seniors, and Alumni. This position works within the Career Services Center to prepare and support a wide variety of students and alumni in achieving their educational, professional and career goals. Duties include providing career advising and education on topics such as, but not limited to, career exploration and/or major exploration, career planning and implementation, job and internship search, application material review (resumes, cover letters, personal statements), grad school search and planning, interview skills, career assessment, basic budgeting and more. In addition to providing career advising services, the position will also oversee the design and implementation of 4-5 career-related programs and initiatives each semester that directly support the career and professional needs of Junior and Senior students.

Core Responsibilities:

Career Advising & Education
  • Effectively guide students and alumni on strategic exploration of careers that correlate to their major, skills/abilities and interests using motivational interview techniques, career development theories and web-based career exploration tools.
  • Advise students on application development for job/internship positions and graduate school including personal statements, CVs and resumes, cover letters, obtaining letters of recommendation and professional references, etc.
  • Educate and advise students on job search strategies (e.g., Networking, LinkedIn, Indeed, Handshake) and job search tracking.
  • Assist with interview preparation and conduct evaluated mock interviews.
  • Support students and alumni at all stages of the process of considering, preparing for, and applying to a wide range of graduate/professional school programs.
  • Assist students in finding experiential learning opportunities to further their skills building and career development both on and off-campus; Alternative Spring Breaks, club/org involvement, volunteering, job shadowing and more.
  • Educate students on applicable employment-related laws and regulations (e.g., ADA, DACA, etc.) affecting their career goals.
  • Educate students on how to identify trustworthy job and internship postings including what "red flags" to be aware of to ensure their safety in a job or internship search process.


Program & Event Management
  • In coordination with CSC staff, plan and execute 4-5 career-development events/workshops/programs each semester (Fall & Spring) based on student input and need.
  • Oversee event logistics and create marketing materials/communication to effectively promote CSC events/workshops/programs to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Conduct classroom and student organization presentations on various graduate/professional school topics and career-related topics as requested.


Additional Responsibilities
  • Represent the Career Services Center at admission/recruiting events, student orientation programs, and community networking events; occasional evening and weekend hours required.
  • Research and develop career support/resource materials to be utilized in workshops, social media, and office website.
  • Connect with Assistant Director of Employer Relations and conduct individual career and employment research to stay current on trends, markets, and career sectors.
  • Assist in the supervision of student workers.


Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in higher education, career/workforce development, or advising/tutoring/coaching or the like with students in a high school or post-secondary setting.
  • Experience working with diverse students (i.e., first generation, low income, "non-traditional" students, racial/ethnic minorities, Dreamers, etc.).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate and engage with individuals through 1:1 advising, classroom presentations, and career-related workshops.
  • Strong understanding and competency of student development, student development theory and/or career development theories.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (NSC does not sponsor employment-related visas).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling, education, or related field.
  • Knowledge and skills in career coaching and career development trends.
  • Experience in event/program planning and management.
  • Experience with CSM/CRM software (e.g., Handshake).
  • Knowledge of core professional career readiness competencies (NACE; National Association of Colleges & Employers).


Salary & Benefits

Budgeted salary for this position is $47,500. Nevada State College offers excellent benefits, including 15.50% retirement match, 24 annual leave days, beginning balance of 30 sick leave days, 11 paid holidays, educational benefits, and the choice of three health insurance plans that can be supplemented with flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts.
