Position Summary:

Campus Safety officers are responsible for the safety and security of Willamette University's students, employees, visitors and property during the officer's assigned shift. Deals with all violations of law and campus policy in an appropriate manner, and executes such with the professional practices of the Office of Campus Safety.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Actively engages in patrol activities to ensure the security of the Willamette University campus. Personally inspects areas of campus to ensure that buildings are secured according to schedule.

  • Investigates and documents unsafe conditions, damage to University property and persons engaging in criminal activities.

  • Issues trespass warnings and takes necessary actions with persons committing crimes or violations of University policy.

  • Conducts criminal investigations, investigates vehicle and other accidents occurring on University property.

  • Renders first aid and takes appropriate action for further medical assistance as required.

  • Appears and testifies in court as required.

  • Assists at University functions to secure peace and safety.

  • Performs one or more of the following special duties: a) Maintains work schedules for Campus Safety Officers. b) Calculates and submits payroll time sheets for Campus Safety employees. c) Arranges and provides training for Campus Safety Officers. d) Coordinates uniform issuance and ordering. e) Maintains vehicle maintenance logs. f) Supervises student dispatchers and safety assistants. g) Coordinates contract security officer hiring. h) Maintains suspect files. i) Tests fire and burglar alarm systems and coordinates drills. j) Coordinates Community Relations model in a residence hall. k) Performs regular lighting safety checks of campus and reports problems. l) Coordinates lost and found and property disposal. m) Monitors University schedules for upcoming high-risk events.

  • Patrols University parking lots and issues citations for violations.

  • Unlocks secured areas for authorized personnel and assists persons needing information and directions.

  • Prepares reports using a computer.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education : Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. High School diploma preferred.

Experience : Two to four years related experience.


Certificates & Licenses: Possession of a valid Oregon Driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire. An employer-paid pre-employment physical is required. The physical examination must certify that an applicant is able to walk, ride a bicycle, drive a vehicle, and physically restrain another person, as necessary.

Other Requirements

Ability to operate radio communications equipment. Ability to type (speed is not an important factor). Strong verbal and writing skills in English. Be available to work varied hours as requested. Ability to be creative and take individual initiative and responsibility. Strong commitment to service. Must meet minimum criteria for certification by the Board on Public Safety Standards and Training, which requires candidates be 21 years of age, high school diploma or GED, and free from any felony criminal convictions. The physical examination must certify that an applicant is able to walk, ride a bicycle, drive a vehicle, and physically restrain another person, as necessary. Successful clearance of a criminal conviction record check. Ability to work independently as well as demonstrate ability to promote successful community relations with co-workers, the campus community and the public.

Scheduled weekly hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
