Under general supervision, the position provides tailored retention and student success services for Black/African American students and leads the activities of the Black Student Success Center through strategic initiatives focused on academic success, well-being, inclusion, celebration, and graduation of Black/African American students. The Black Student Success Center primarily serves the needs of Black/African American students under the Division of Institutional Equity, Diversity and Justice. The position assists the supervising manager by supporting services for Black/African American students through case management towards graduation/transfer, organizing services, developing workshops, trainings, and events, and coordinating centralized assessment of student success initiatives geared towards closing equity gaps and addressing campus climate.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:


  1. Utilizes data to develop and assess tailored Black/African American student retention, academic success, basic needs, and services and programs through the Black Student Success Center.
  2. Connects Black/African American students to appropriate programs and services both on campus and off-campus to best assist them with issues affecting their retention, success, basic needs, safety, and wellbeing.
  3. Follows equity-focused Black/African American student involvement in on-campus support resources, including academic counseling, development of student educational plans, support services related to financial aid, scholarships, internships, transfer, including completion of transfer admission guarantees, and other campus services through a case management model.
  4. Collaborate with retention specialists and success coaches to coordinate and align Black/African American student success and retention efforts with District-wide retention efforts.
  5. Prepares and provides educational workshops and trainings for students, staff, and faculty, on topics related to inclusion, student experience, strengths of Black/African American students, best practices for supporting Black/African American student success, and services available for students through the Center.
  6. Help identify and monitor progress on student-directed and student-driven goals that support self-sufficiency.
  7. Collaborates with campus-based mental health professionals to coordinate workshops and outreach that support the well-being and persistence of Black/African American students.
  8. Collaborates with academic and career counselors, success coaches, instructional/non-instructional faculty, staff, instructional aids, tutors, and managers to identify potential barriers to Black/African American student persistence and develops culturally responsive strategies to address these barriers.
  9. Monitors responses and supports for Black/African American-identified students Early Alerts submitted by faculty and staff through the establishment of goals centered in equity to promote success.
  10. Supports student outreach, recruitment, career, retention, completion, and transfer efforts, in collaboration with other campus partners, with a special focus on Black/African Americans.
  11. Develops reports to assist the supervising manager with assessing the programs, services, and retention efforts of the Student Success Center, including program review, annual planning and development of student learning outcomes.
  12. Identifies goals of the Black Student Success Center and resources necessary to assist the supervising manager to meet the changing needs of Black/African American students.
  13. Monitors the Center budget to assist the supervising manager in budget administration, including requisitions, documentation, and databases.
  14. Develops events and services for the Black Student Success Center to support the educational experience of Black/African American students in collaboration with staff and faculty, including overseeing logistics and scheduling.
  15. Implements the operations of the Black Student Success Center, including front-desk coverage, event calendar management and scheduling.
  16. Collaborates with District staff to identify, hire and lead hourly staff.
  17. Develops work schedules for student workers and staff of the center.
  18. Leads, mentors, and evaluates performance for student interns/workers and volunteers from a strengths-based perspective, related to their program or projects, particularly those focused on Black/African American student programs and services.
  19. Conducts Black Student Success Center orientations to provide information of services.
  20. Conducts trainings for student workers and hourly staff to familiarize staff with the operations of the Black Student Success Center.
  21. Assist in the development of culturally appropriate marketing and publicity materials such as flyers, emails, newsletters, posters, presentations, brochures, videos, websites, and social media platforms.
  22. Updates the Black Student Success Center website to provide students with relevant information.
  23. Performs related duties as assigned.



EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


  1. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in education, counseling, psychology, sociology, or closely related field
  2. Two (2) years of experience working with the Black/African American community or diversity affairs.
  3. Two (2) years of experience working in academic advising, retention, education, student services and success, non-profit, community organizing, mental health, or related field.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master's Degree in education, counseling, psychology, sociology, or closely related field.
  2. Four (4) years of experience working in the field of student services and success, education, non-profit, community organizing, mental health, or related field.
  3. Experience selecting, training, and leading hourly staff

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE:


  1. Knowledge and understanding of Black/African American student experience in higher education, as well as knowledge of broader diversity in higher education and the ability to address these issues through retention programs and activities.
  2. Knowledge of student retention strategies and services for Black/African American students.
  3. Knowledge and understanding specifically of emerging challenges, trends, and concerns within the Black/African American community.
  4. Experience with crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and responding to emergent needs.
  5. Commitment to social change including working to end all forms of oppression: racism, heterosexism, trans oppression, ableism, sexism, classism, etc.
  6. Ability to promote, organize and facilitate group meetings.
  7. Ability to effectively prioritize multiple work priorities and organize various projects and to follow safety and confidentiality protocols.
  8. Experience in creating, implementing, facilitating, and publicizing events for both student and employee stakeholders
  9. Excellent cultural competency skills to engage with individuals from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
  10. Demonstrated experience working with communities who have been traditionally underserved by higher education and experience in the pedagogy reflecting intersections of race, culture, class, ethnic, and queer communities.
  11. Demonstrated experience with college students in program leadership and professional development.
  12. Demonstrated skills in web marketing, design, and social media interactions.
  13. Demonstrated experience in the following areas: recruitment, retention, or academic advising at the university level.
  14. Excellent initiative, organization, attention to detail, resourcefulness and problem-solving.
  15. Excellent interpersonal communications skills (e.g. the ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, sensitivity in interacting with students, staff, & faculty and handling sensitive issues).
  16. Ability to learn policies and procedures from both verbal and written sources; ability to apply and explain office policies and procedures with consistency.
  17. Knowledge and experience using standard office computer applications such as Google Email and Calendars, Word, Excel, database software.
  18. Ability to prepare various documents including operations manuals and procedures, program and activity schedules, proposals, and monitor budgets.
