Job Description

The ideal candidate will share Grossmont College's Vision, Mission, and Values; and will work collaboratively to cultivate an equitable student-centered environment for students from diverse backgrounds including racial and ethnic identities, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, and disabilities.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Athletics, the Athletics Counselor Coordinator shall provide information and counseling support to advance the educational success, onboarding, retention, and academic goal completion of student athletes. The incumbent will achieve this by providing academic, personal, compliance and eligibility, and career counseling for student athletes. They will develop and implement academic and personal success services specifically designed to address the needs and challenges unique to student athletes, while serving as the campus expert and liaison to internal and external resources, partnerships, and affiliates.

Working independently under general direction, major duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Athletics Counseling
  • Provides academic, personal, and career related counseling to prospective, new, and continuing student athletes.
  • Assists student athletes in identifying their educational and career goals and developing abbreviated and comprehensive educational plans in line with student-stated educational goals.
  • Collaborates with athletics eligibility specialist(s) on compliance and eligibility rules
  • Interprets degree and university transfer requirements, policies, and procedures unique to athletes.
  • Develops effective assessment tools that assist the college with understanding the specific needs of student athletes.
  • Teaches counseling courses and facilitates academic success workshops pertaining to career planning, college success, and other personal development courses offered within the Counseling division.
  • Designs and maintains processes to track academic success of student athletes.
  • Prepares oral and written reports related to issues and concerns impacting student athletes.
  • Participates in college-wide planning and evaluations processes.
  • Plans and facilitates support programs for student athletes that result in the educational growth of students.
  • Participates in Counseling divisional meetings and trainings to maintain competencies within the educational counseling profession.
  • Provides and reviews required forms related to the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I, II, and III, National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) transfer rules, and Pacific Coast Athletic Conference (PCAC) requirements.
  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of residency requirements.
  • This position may include a combination of day, evening, and weekend assignments.
  • Others duties as assigned.


Athletics Coordination - approximately 25% of the position
  • Develops, designs, and implements programs and services that provide support and academic success related to various issues and challenges unique to student athletes.
  • Oversees the creation and organization of programs such as learning communities in support of the academic success, retention, graduation, and/or transfer of student athletes.
  • Creates and conducts assessments of student services and programs with the goals of assisting student athletes to enrich their campus experience and enhance their academic success.
  • Collaborates with various campus departments and programs such as Financial Aid, EOPS, and A.R.C. to create more inclusive and enriching experiences for student athletes and to improve outcomes related to the onboarding, retentions, graduation, and/or transfer of student athletes.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert pertaining to current and future compliance and eligibility criteria.
  • Provides appropriate trainings, workshops, and resources for administrators, faculty, staff, and students to ensure understanding and compliance of matters pertaining to athletic programs.
  • Develops communiques to provide prospective, incoming, and enrolled student athletes with timely information on programs, resources, events, activities, important timelines, and academic and enrichment opportunities.
  • Occasional travel to support student success and attend conferences as well as professional development opportunities.
  • Assists with various gender equity, compliance, and eligibility reports as required in collaboration with the eligibility officer and support specialist.
  • Others duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent

(NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Academic counseling experience in higher education.
  • Knowledge and practice of theory, counseling and advising modalities, and current trends/issues related to student athletes in higher education.
  • Experience and knowledge in developing, planning, designing, implementing, and assessing student programs.
  • Demonstrated experience counseling students individually and in groups on academic and personal matters.
  • Experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students with an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes.
  • Comprehensive, current knowledge of 3C2A, PCAC, NCAA, and NAIA compliance requirements, resources and educational policies, procedures and practices regarding student athletes.
  • Demonstrated commitment, knowledge, and understanding of the unique challenges that impact the diverse needs of student athletes.
  • Experience coordinating workshops, trainings, and other co-curricular activities.
  • Demonstrated relevant cultural humility through knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Experience in effective outreach and networking, as well as experience with high impact practices that facilitate access, success, and equity for a diverse student population.
  • Ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations and appropriately advocate for the student.
