Associate Director, Resident Ministry

Job Summary:

The associate director for resident ministry (hereafter referred to as associate director) is a senior member of the University Ministry (UM) team whose primary responsibility is overseeing the resident ministry (RM) program at the University of San Francisco (USF). The RM program serves 13-15 resident ministers who live in the USF residence halls and complete part-time internships in the University Ministry office. The associate director oversees the selection, hiring, supervision and support of this team throughout the year. In addition, the associate director supports and assists with other areas of programming and services provided through the University Ministry office which may include but is not limited to spiritual direction, liturgies, interfaith programs, retreats, events, immersion trips and faculty and staff spirituality programs. As the director of resident ministry, the associate director will be the primary liaison between University Ministry and the Division of Student Life. The associate director collaborates with the University Ministry staff and the Division of Student Life to create a supportive University community which encourages student learning and development in the Jesuit Catholic tradition; recognizes and celebrates the rich diversity of faith and culture on campus; and provides experiences that challenge students to develop the spiritual, intellectual and other skills needed to fashion a more humane and just world. The associate director is expected to uphold and support the overall vision and mission of University Ministry at USF in positive, collaborative and creative ways.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Direct the Resident Ministry (RM) Program.
Recruit, interview, and hire up to 15 resident ministers (RMs) annually.
When necessary, responsible for terminating RMs.
Supervise RMs who work in the USF residence halls and in University Ministry.
Oversee and develop mentoring relationships between RMs and University Ministry professional staff.
Facilitate excellent communication between the University Ministry professional staff and RMs.
Develop and lead orientation program for RMs.
Produce and maintain RM handbook, policies, processes and annual program budget.
Develop, coordinate and/or lead spiritual formation and professional development programs and workshops for the RMs on topics related to ministry and Jesuit education.
Oversee and direct annual performance review process of RMs involving the University Ministry staff and other University personnel as appropriate.

2. Serve as a liaison with the Division of Student Life.
Develop and support new program development on the principles of Ignatian spirituality and Jesuit education among students, faculty, and staff involved in Living Learning Communities, Student Leadership and Engagement, Residence Life and other related departments.
Ensure excellent communication and effective working relationships between RMs, RAs and Residence Life staff in order to provide enriching programs and support for students in the residence halls.

3. General Responsibilities
Participate in and help organize or coordinate University Ministry signature events and programs such as retreats, service opportunities, immersion trips, leadership formation and/or staff development.
Maintain communication and foster collaboration with USF departments and divisions as well as community partners including St. Ignatius Church, the Archdiocese of San Francisco, the San Francisco Interfaith Council, and others as appropriate.
Participate in weekly staff meetings and hold regular office hours.
Serve on university committees as assigned by the director.
Engage in professional development through reading, workshops, and research.

Minimum Requirements:

Masters degree in divinity, theology or related field. At least five years of experience working in a ministry context post-graduate school. Experience with supervision of staff and student workers. Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. Demonstrated competence in spiritual direction, pastoral counseling, group facilitation, and public speaking. Experience and familiarity with Ignatian spirituality, the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, Catholic theology and social teaching, and the tradition of Jesuit education. Experience and familiarity with developmental psychology and issues facing young adults and college students. Ability to travel and available for evening/weekend work. Demonstrated commitment to ones own religious faith and spiritual development. Demonstrated commitment and evidence of professional training in the areas of racial identity development, diversity, equity, inclusion and privilege.
