About the Position:
The College of Natural Science and Mathematics is dedicated to the principle that teaching and research are intricately mixed and undergraduate research is an integral part of education. By combining quality classroom instruction, student involvement in research, and strong academic advising, we transform the student experience. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as an Assistant to Desert Studies Managers (Instructional Support Assistant II). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Under general supervision of the Director, the Instructional Support Assistant II assists management staff of the Desert Studies Center (DSC) in implementing the education, research and public service mission of the CSU Desert Studies Consortium (CDSC). Assists users of the Desert Studies Center during their visits. Assists the DSC Maintenance Mechanic with general upkeep of the Desert Studies Center. Maintains instructional materials and participates in outreach activities for the Desert Studies Center. Participates in outreach activities, guided tours and lectures to academic and professional groups. Assists visiting researcher in logistics and project implementation. Demonstrating proper use of DSC facilities and research equipment. Other duties as assigned.



Essential Qualifications:
Equivalent to one year of experience performing support services for a field instructional program and involving such activities as preparing, producing, dispensing or storing materials, supplies, and equipment related to field sciences, or equivalent to one year of experience in ordering, purchasing, accounting or in-office work related to outdoor-education materials, supplies, or equipment, or in an office which provided similar services to a technical function or unit may be substituted for six months of the experience.
Ability to communicate effectively with students, instructors, researchers, and CDSC personnel, both on-site and away from DSC. Strong organizational skills
Working knowledge of fundamental computer skills and applications, including spreadsheets, word processing and presentation software. Working knowledge of the natural history of the Mojave Desert and ability to clearly and effectively convey such knowledge to college-aged, and older, students. Knowledge and experience conducting basic scientific fieldwork, collecting and recording data, working with databases, performing basic data analyses, and archiving data. Ability to coordinate and lead instructional activities for small and large groups. Ability to work for extended periods outdoors. Flexibility to work on weekends and varied hours at the Desert Studies Center or at CSUF. Ability to follow written and oral instruction. Ability to use hand and power tools, and to understand mechanical systems. Ability to safely move and lift up to 40 lbs. Ability to work independently with basic instructions.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Special Working Conditions:
Often works for short periods in extreme outdoor desert conditions (hot and dry). Occasionally must work outdoors for short periods of time in rain or high winds. Typically works on natural (dirt) surfaces.
