Assistant Professor of Graphic and Interactive Design

The Department of Visual Arts in the College of the Arts at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor of Graphic and Interactive Design with appointment to begin Fall 2020.

CSUF faculty are committed teachers and scholars who bring research and creative discovery to students in classrooms, labs, studios, and individually mentored projects. They teach broadly in the curricula of their departments, advise students, and serve on departmental and university committees. The primary responsibilities of the person in this position will include the development and teaching of graphic and interactive design to undergraduate and graduate students. This person will also be responsible for producing creative/scholarly work commensurate with the requirements for tenure. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department, advise students, serve on committees, and participate in their discipline and larger university communities.

The Department
The Department of Visual Arts serves approximately 1,700 undergraduate art majors and 60 graduate students, with 34 full-time and 80+ lecturer faculty. The department offers both a BA in Art and BFA in Art with 13 areas of concentration, in addition to an MA and MFA in Art with 9 areas of concentration. CSUF is located about 30 miles from downtown Los Angeles in metropolitan Orange County and presents a full range of fine arts and professional programs including a nationally recognized art gallery located in the Visual Arts complex and the Grand Central Art Center, a 45,000 sq. ft. graduate studio/residence/exhibition facility located 15 minutes from campus. Position
The primary professional responsibilities of this instructional faculty member are to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the graphic and interactive design concentration. Course curriculums explore principles in relationship to traditional and emerging digital media and range from graphic design foundations, package design, interactive media, UX design, UI design, and motion graphics. Responsibilities include: advising students; mentoring graduate students and thesis projects; engaging in active peer-reviewed creative and/or scholarly activities; participating in department, college, university, and system-wide service; maintaining office hours; and working collaboratively and productively with colleagues. Positive tenure and promotion decisions require excellent teaching; a record of peer-reviewed creative and/or scholarly activity in the discipline; strong leadership contributions to department and university committees and to external professional organizations that serve the broader discipline's communities.

Qualifications
  • MFA degree from an accredited institution with an emphasis in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Communication Design, or equivalent degree
  • Evidence of excellent technical skills (within the most current Macintosh operating system) to instruct students in the use of Adobe Creative Cloud as well as an advanced understanding of web publishing and scripting, user experience design, user interface design, and integrated 3D design in relationship to graphic design
  • University-level teaching experience in courses specifically relevant to the position
  • Evidence of and/or potential for a record of achievement as a graphic designer
  • Evidence of the ability to balance excellent teaching, scholarship, and service
  • Evidence of experience working collaboratively with colleagues and communities
  • Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in teaching diverse student populations, including first-generation college students


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Evidence of a professional practice as a graphic designer
  • Evidence of leadership, communication, organizational, and management skills as demonstrated through successful recruitment and outreach efforts in university programs

  • Digital portfolio demonstrating the candidate's expertise as a practicing graphic designer with an understanding of contemporary and historical concepts in art and design. Ideally portfolios will include 20 images of current work from the past 5-years.
  • Digital portfolio of 20 examples of student work that demonstrate a breadth of print and screen-based design, reflecting the candidate's ability to teach technical and conceptual approaches to graphic and interactive design, critical thinking, and problem solving. Student examples should be labeled as to how the work submitted relates to a course assignment.
  • Three letters of recommendation. Please have these ready for the referents to submit.
  • Official academic transcripts from all higher education institutions attended
  • Additional material such as current course outlines, course assignments, and rubrics may also be requested.

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications, and is subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases.
