The Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of the Arts at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor in Dance with the appointment to begin Fall 2020.

CSUF faculty are committed teachers and scholars who bring research and creative discovery to students in classrooms, labs, studios, and individually mentored projects. They teach broadly in the curricula of their departments, advise students, and serve on departmental and university committees. The primary responsibilities of the person in this position will include teaching all levels of ballet technique (beginning, intermediate, and advanced) that is based on sound anatomical and wellness principles coupled with a value of diverse aesthetics to undergraduate students. This person will also be responsible for producing creative/scholarly work commensurate with the requirements for tenure. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department, advise students, serve on committees, and participate in their discipline and larger university communities.
The Department
The Department of Theatre and Dance offers a Bachelor of Arts in Dance for students seeking a broad and rich background in both theory and practice. The program serves approximately 100 dance majors, with 4 full-time and 7 part-time faculty members. In addition, the dance program offers numerous general education experiences to thousands of CSUF students each semester. The dance curriculum includes intensive training in modern/contemporary dance, ballet, and dance composition; this is complemented by improvisation, dance history, kinesiology, dance pedagogy, and diverse performing experiences. The dance program is integrated with the theatre production program and produces two main-stage productions a year in addition to several smaller studio productions. The dance program actively participates in the American College Dance Festival and has been selected to perform in the Gala Concerts. The program has also received honors at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Cal State Fullerton Department of Theatre and Dance is fully accredited by National Association of Schools of Dance and the National Association of Schools of Theatre and is a member of University Resident Theater Association and United States Institute for Theatre Technology. Position
The primary professional responsibilities of this instructional faculty member are to teach undergraduate-level courses in all levels of ballet technique (beginning, intermediate, and advanced) based on sound anatomical and wellness principles coupled with a value of diverse aesthetics. Other duties could include teaching dance composition, pointe, men's class, classical variations, repertoire, partnering, dance conditioning as well as choreographing for dance concerts, which is strongly encouraged but not required. In addition, the person in this position will be expected to participate in advising students; engage in active peer-reviewed creative/scholarly activities; participate in department, college, university, and system-wide service including participating with dance auditions and recruitment; maintain office hours, and work collaboratively and productively with colleagues. Positive tenure and promotion decisions require excellent teaching; a record of peer-reviewed creative/scholarly activity in the discipline; and strong leadership contributions to school, college and university committees and to external professional organizations that serve the broader discipline's communities.
Required Qualifications:
  • MFA in Dance
  • Evidence of professional experience in the dance field
  • Evidence of successful college-level teaching or other professional settings in all levels of ballet technique using sound anatomical and wellness principles
  • Evidence of successful creative/scholarly activities
  • Evidence of the ability to balance excellent teaching, scholarship, and service
  • Experience in working collaboratively with colleagues and communities
  • Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in teaching diverse student populations, including first-generation college students

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to teach dance composition
  • Evidence of successful teaching in the area of classical variations and/or repertoire
  • Demonstrated ability to teach pointe or men's class and/or partnering

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications and is subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases.
