Job Summary:

The University of San Francisco School Of Law is seeking a creative, dynamic, and goal-oriented individual with strong leadership skills to interface with students, administration, faculty, alumni and the community to develop and implement programs and ideas that will enhance the School of Law experience for our students.

This individual will serve as the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at the School of Law with primary responsibility for students. This individual will work closely with senior administrators in multiple departments to identify and resolve student concerns or problems and to solicit and consider student suggestions.

This individual will develop, interpret, administer and provide leadership to all aspects of student life, including working with the Student Bar Association and student organizations; planning school-wide events, such as Orientation and Commencement; overseeing mission-related activities, which include mental health and wellness programs, public interest and social justice programs, pro bono and community service programs, equity and inclusion awareness issues and activities; collaborating with students to plan student-organized events; and administering student discipline for behavioral or conduct issues. This individual is responsible for gathering data, administering surveys, and drafting reports, including accreditation self-study reports. This individual represents the School of Law at local and national conferences and consortia.

The Assistant Dean for Student Affairs reports directly to the Dean of the School of Law.

Job Responsibilities:

Provide Leadership to and Administrative Oversight of Student Affairs
Serve as primary point of contact for law students to the administration, faculty and staff.
Communicate School of Law priorities to law students.
Publish Student Handbook and other student policies and informational materials.
Interpret and implement all applicable School of Law and University rules and communicate and explain information on School of Law rules and procedures and mechanisms for redress of problems or concerns.
Manage the Student Affairs budget, including all student-related funding, e.g., reimbursement for student conference participation, funding for student events and initiatives, etc.
Understand and explain other funding sources to students for their organized activities.
Oversee Student Organizations and Student-Organized Events
Provide leadership and support to the Student Bar Association (SBA) and serve as advisor to and interact with approximately 30 law student organizations.
Work closely with the SBA and the Senior Director for Administration on the SBA budget.
Develop, interpret, and implement general policies for student organizations, e.g., event planning policies, student travel and reimbursement policies.
Oversee special events sponsored by student organizations, including student organization information fairs, the annual public interest law fundraiser, conferences, affinity student organization graduation celebrations, commemorative dinners, and symposia. Oversight includes working with student leaders and various administrative offices, including Development & Alumni Relations and Communications; coordinating solicitation, publicity, and outreach to community and alumni; and training of volunteers; and determining staffing needs and volunteer tasks.
Plan and manage student organization leadership retreat in the fall semester.

Oversee School of Law Pro Bono, Community Service, and Public Interest Grant Programs
Work with current and create new community agency partners, e.g., Bar Association of San Francisco, Edgewood Center for Children, Golden Gate National Parks, Glide, St. Anthony Foundation, and the San Francisco Food Bank, to provide significant pro bono and community service opportunities each year.
Serve as lead contact with non-profit OneJustice for the twice-a-year Justice Bus program offering.
Supervise law student pro bono coordinator.
Oversee collection of pro bono timesheets and administration of pro bono awards.
Oversee the raising of funds for our public interest grant program, which includes external events and internal student-run events.
Administer the public interest grant program, which provides funds to students working in public interest and public service positions during the summer.
Plan public interest graduation celebration, which acknowledges participants of various public interest programs and recipients of various public interest and pro bono distinctions.
Oversee and manage the Public Interest Law Foundation Advisory Board to create opportunities for giving and mentoring.

Create Opportunities for Awareness and Manage Issues, Initiatives, and Activities Relating to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Implement and monitor School of Law diversity strategy as it relates to non-academic matters and provide input on general strategy for the School of Laws comprehensive diversity policies.
Facilitate and encourage discussions on issues related to diversity with students, faculty, and administration. Develop and participate in discussions to enhance effectiveness of academic programs aimed at diverse student population.
Partner with student organizations to sponsor panels and events on diversity-related issues.
Investigate and recommend action on complaints regarding insensitivity, harassment, or other inappropriate action on the part of students.
Participate in and help organize University-wide diversity programs and initiatives.
Co-chair School of Law Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.

Oversee School of Law Mental Health and Wellness Program
Provide non-academic counseling and assist with referrals to University Counseling and Psychological Services, when appropriate.
Organize regular and frequent mental health and wellness events and activities, ranging from informal lunchtime wellness activities to formal MCLE substance abuse events for students and alumni.
Coordinate with the University Counseling and Psychological Services program to create awareness about mental health issues and support services and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of these services.

Serve as Primary Liaison to University for School of Law Housing Facility
Work with University housing office to implement law school housing priorities and determine appropriate dates for applications and moving in/out.
Participate in the hiring process for the housing facility Community Manager, which is an upper-division law student.
Work with University housing staff member to resolve problems and concerns, including facility-related problems and conduct issues and to ensure a positive housing experience for students.

Initiate, Manage, and Oversee School of Law Student Conduct Disciplinary Process
Oversee student conduct issues and disciplinary process. Handle crisis intervention. Facilitate the resolution of student issues and grievances, such as alleged discrimination and non-academic conflicts, drawing upon and involving the Universitys resources when appropriate.
Work with School of Law senior administration on issues that involve both behavioral and academic-related concerns.
Work with University staff, including Associate Vice Provost and Dean of Students; Senior Director of Counseling and Psychological Services; Title IX Coordinator; Director of Office of Student Conduct, Rights, and Responsibilities; Director of Health Promotion Services; and Associate Dean of Students.

Oversee Major School of Law Events
Plan, oversee, and manage all aspects of first-year Orientation.
Oversee the planning and organization of Commencement, including the process for inviting and coordinating the Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degree Recipient; commencement awards; student speaker and vocalist selection.

Administrative and Additional Responsibilities
Serve as primary lead on climate issues and non-academic community-wide concerns.
Collaborate with Office of Career Planning to develop and maintain fellowships and post-graduate employment and professional development programs.
Serve on various School of Law and University committees and task forces.
Advise the Dean and others on the formulation and fine-tuning of department policy by advising on areas needing clarification and identifying solutions and recommend solutions to department problems without precedent.
Provide essential information to the Dean and the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs on the students needs and interest during strategic planning and other decision making.

Minimum Requirements:

Demonstrate five years professional success in progressively responsible student affairs or comparable positions in an academic setting, including supervisory responsibility for personnel, program development, budget management and oversight, policy review, and strategic planning.
A JD from an ABA accredited School of Law highly preferred. Consideration also will be given to those available to demonstrate comparable career accomplishments, transferable skills, and credentials from education, social work, or another related field.
Substantive experience working with students, students with disabilities, student organizations, and student social/community activities and events, with demonstrated commitment to diversity and multiculturalism.
Proven leadership skills, organizational understanding, and ability to work collaboratively in a large, multifaceted, complex institution.
Excellent interpersonal, time-management, and oral and written communication skills.
Advanced analytical skills with demonstrated abilities to identify and creatively solve problems using data driven and cost-benefit analyses.
The ability to create effective partnerships within the School of Law, the University, and with external constituencies, and a genuine interest and enthusiasm in working with students, faculty, and staff.
Strong crisis management skills and knowledge of principles and procedures involved in risk assessment.
Computer proficiency with knowledge of common computer application programs, and demonstrated knowledge of the uses of technology to enhance student service delivery systems.
