About the Opportunity

JOB SUMMARY

The Engineering Applications Specialist will work with the Engineering Computer Center team to manage and maintain the College of Engineering (COE) computers and network services, while providing expert and friendly technical support to faculty, staff, and students by using the following process: Analyze support requests; Evaluate potential solutions; and Recommend most effective strategy and explain reasoning.

To ensure that essential services are available to the COE community, work outside of regular business hours will occasionally be required for this position. This is primarily an on-site only position; occasional remote work opportunities may be authorized.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Expert knowledge of either/both Matlab or Autodesk products suites. Expert knowledge of at least two of the following engineering software suites: Abaqus, Ansys, ArcGIS, Arena, Aspen, Cadence, Labview, PSpice, Schrodinger; other engineering packages in use at Northeastern University. Proficency in writing scripts / coding in at least one of the following: C++, Java, JavaScript, Perl, Powershell, Python. Familiarity with basic TCP/IP network protocols and services: LDAP, NFS, CIFS, DNS, DHCP. Support experience with Office 365 products, academic software, and enterprise software. Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 25 lbs. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on projects; keep long-term projects on track; and meet day-to-day support needs of the COE community in a professional and friendly manner. Skillset required include: Teamwork, verbal and written communication, documentation, time-management and objective triage. Knowledge and skills required are normally obtained through at least 2 - 3 years of hands-on experience in at least two of the following areas: End-user support; Desktop troubleshooting (Windows / Linux / Mac OS); and server administration (Windows / Linux / Mac OS). Additional desirable qualifications include: experience working in an academic environment; MCSE, Linux, or VMware certifications; and experience with VMware virtualized servers and desktops.

JOB DUTIES

1) Software Support: Create support documentation and training/test exercises for all software utilized by COE. Lead testing of COE-managed images for computers. Coordinate troubleshooting of software installations on personal and/or University computers for non-managed images.

2) Systems Administration: Help provide administration, monitoring, and maintenance for COE computer servers and systems; troubleshooting and emergency response in case of problems.

3) User Support: Provide effective and timely support with computer issues to COE faculty, staff, and students. Provide support for hardware or enterprise and academic software for users of Windows 10, Linux, and Mac OS. Help users with COE-managed services such as VMware Horizon, file sharing services, COE accounts, web sites, mailing lists, etc. Security evaluation and remediation. Set up and configure new computers and peripherals. Monitor responses to help requests in help ticketing systems.

4) Self-Education: Utilize any resources provided by Northeastern University or COE (colleagues, educational opportunities, documentation, training courses, etc.) to improve both technical skills and professional development.
