Job Summary
The Department of Pathology is seeking a qualified individual to be responsible for maintaining the health and care of laboratory mice for a large UM research laboratory. The individual will also coordinate the breeding and shipment of animals to collaborating laboratories worldwide.

Responsibilities*
Day to day duties will include: coordinating and performing complex work in animal husbandry including the handling, feeding, mating and care of laboratory mice; monitoring animal health and environmental conditions; observing animals for signs of disease and health defects; managing the breeding colony; coordinating animal shipments and transfers; maintaining daily census and records of animal care, treatment and breeding; managing protocols and personnel using eRam; writing and editing protocols and SOP's; and communicating daily with laboratory staff and collaborators regarding animal requests.

Other laboratory responsibilities, as they arise, under the direction of the PI.

Required Qualifications*
  • BA or BS degree in biomedical sciences (or related field)
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with laboratory mice, including: complex work in animal husbandry, breeding, feeding and care
  • Experience coordinating animal shipments and transfers worldwide
  • Skilled in writing and editing protocols and SOP's
  • Experience managing protocols and personnel using eRam
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment
  • Highly responsible, cooperative and able to work independently and with initiative
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills to work with a large, diverse group
  • Experience working with standard computer software

Work Schedule
  • Hours: 40 hours/week, including periodic (scheduled) weekend hours
  • Must be available evenings and weekends to attend to animal care (in case of emergency)

Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
