Accounting Technician

Primary Purpose of Position:
The primary purpose of this position in the travel office is to assist in the reimbursement of employee travel on behalf of the university. The Accounting Technician reviews and confirms the business purpose of university travel and through policy reviews and regulations verifies that a claim is valid. This validation cross references generally accepted accounting principles, State policy and NCCU regulations before approving any university business-related travel for which the university incurs expense (airfare or car rental charged to a university purchasing card) even if the traveler does not request reimbursement. Hence, this position requires a working knowledge of accounting principles and practices. It requires the ability to understand, interpret and apply regulations and policies to provide good customer service to University travelers and to prevent or resolve issues of noncompliance.


Minimum Education/Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The successful candidate must possess a thorough knowledge of accounting principles, competency in interpreting and applying travel policies and procedures and regulations mandated by the State and the University; knowledge of Banner INB or equivalent system; knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) Applications; knowledge of Concur/Travelink; ability to work independently with little or no supervision; to take initiative to see projects and assignments through to completion; to learn, interpret and analyze information to make necessary decisions; to exercise judgment and discretion in problem solving; to plan, prioritize and organize workflow; ability to work flexible schedules; excellent analytical and organizational skills along with written and oral communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively and diplomatically with a wide range of individuals in a high pressure environment.
