Under direction, the position will assist students of the Disabled Student Program and Services (DSP&S) Department by interpreting the language in students' Academic Accommodation Plans (AAP) and providing access to a variety of classroom and testing accommodations. The position will perform duties related to providing academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and services that will enable students to participate in the general activities, programs, and classes offered by the District.


  • Provides a variety of classroom and testing accommodations for students to ensure compliance with students' AAPs and the academic requirements of classes in all District locations.
  • Schedules the use of testing spaces, accessible furniture and assistive technology that are needed to carry out classroom accommodations as outlined in AAPs.
  • Monitors disabled student accommodations to determine if accommodations are hindering students' learning experiences and to notify department faculty about possible additional accommodations.
  • Develops user accounts needed to use assistive technology equipment and applications to ensure that students have access to departmental accommodation technology.
  • Provides assistance in the use of equipment, technology, auxiliary aids, and accessible furniture to assist students and faculty operate equipment and appropriately understand accessible furniture needs.
  • Orients students receiving DSP&S services regarding the process of providing accommodations to familiarize students with the District's accommodation processes.
  • Enters data related to student contact in relation to providing academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and services to ensure that all student interaction is recorded within student accommodation files and departmental databases.
  • Prepares summaries of accommodation patterns and activities to assist the department improve the accommodation process.
  • Organizes the work of student workers and outside agencies to ensure disabled students are provided with classroom accommodations and testing services such as exam proctors, note takers, captionists, transcribers, readers, etc.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.


    QUALIFICATIONS- Required qualifications to effectively perform the job.

  • Associates Degree, or certificate, in special education or a related field such as human developmental services.
  • Three (3) years of experience working within the field of disability services.

    SKILL to:

  • Apply knowledge of academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and services to determine which types of accessible furniture, assistive technology, academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, services, or modifications are needed to deliver student classroom and testing accommodations; to resolve any issues that may arise with the operation and placement of such items in classrooms, laboratories, and during extracurricular or co-curricular activities; to develop strategies that will assists students maximize the use of such items and compensate for their educational limitations.
  • Apply knowledge of state regulations related to Disabled Student Programs and Services to provide orientation/information sessions that will inform students about the availability of academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and to ensure students that every reasonable effort will be made to assist with the use of such accommodation items and services.
  • Apply knowledge of instructional processes and procedures to adequately inform the implementation of classroom and testing accommodations for students with physical and mental disabilities.
  • Apply knowledge of FERPA and HIPPA to maintain student accommodation records and to not disclose any confidential information to unauthorized parties.
  • Use web based event-calendaring systems to reserve testing spaces at all District locations.
  • Use management information systems to document student contactrelated to academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and services.
  • Use time keeping software to enter work hours for student workers.
  • Use general office software to communicate with students and District staff, organize the delivery of classroom and testing accommodations, develop informational materials, presentations, produce reports, aggregate data, and develop work schedules.

    ABILITY to:
  • Ensure that all classroom and testing accommodation equipment and services are provided in a timely and effective manner.
  • Effectively overcome problems with accessible furniture and assistive technology to not hinder the ability ofstudents to participate in general activities, programs, and classes offered by the District.
  • Effectively develop methods to monitor student academic progress, and assess the effectiveness of accommodations and intervention strategies.
  • Effectively determine if additional accommodations are needed or if modifications of existing equipment are required.
  • Analyze accommodation data to determine trends related to academic adjustments, use of auxiliary aids, and services.
  • Effectively make recommendations for the improvement of services.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the field of disabled student accommodations to make recommendations about possible equipment purchases or to inform changes to departmental procedures.
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with students, faculty, staff, and vendors.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and vendors.

    PHYSICAL ABILITIES AND WORK ENVIRONMENT -Activities and environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.The physical demands and environmental conditions described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

    PHYSICAL ABILITY to:
  • Continuously (5.6 hours - 8 hours) exhibit the ability to communicate, sit, and use fine manipulations to operate a computer and general office equipment.
  • Occasionally (31 minutes - 2.5 hours) exhibit the ability to stand and walk to ensure that student accommodations are provided at all District locations to present student orientations. Occasionally (31 minutes - 2.5 hours), exhibit fine manipulation to operate accommodation equipment.
  • Seldom (30 minutes or less per shift) lift and carry accommodation equipment weighing up to 25 lbs., and reaching above and below shoulder level to retrieve miscellaneous office items.

    ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS:
  • The position will continuously (5.6 hours - 8 hours) work within an indoor office environment with a moderate office climate
  • The position will frequently (2.6 hours - 5.5 hours) interface with various instructors, students, staff, or hourly workers in the process of providing testing accommodations
