Position Summary:
The mission of the Advanced Manufacturing Sciences Institute (AMSI) at Metropolitan State University of Denver is to educate the next generation of manufacturing professionals at the Bachelor's degree level by providing access for students in the program and associated programs to production-grade, state-of-the-art equipment, materials and processes. The AMSI Laboratory Coordinator works with students, under the guidance and direction of the AMSI Director, to support the needs of academic programs, research initiatives and other student-focused activities in MSU Denver's Hartwig CNC Machining & Inspection Laboratory and Lockheed Martin Additive Manufacturing Laboratory. The AMSI Laboratory Coordinator conducts safety training for faculty and students, manages student access to equipment, works collaboratively with industry partners regarding equipment operations and ensures ongoing functionality of the AMSI Laboratories. The incumbent reports directly to the AMSI Director and works collaboratively with AMSI staff and associated faculty in participating programs. The incumbent must be able to work independently, have strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to innovate and think creatively.

Duties/Responsibilities:
1) Manage the day-to-day activities of the AMSI Laboratories with a focus on coordinating student projects, prototype production and research projects. 50%

2) Provide technical expertise regarding the operation of the following: 30%
CNC vertical machining centers (such as Okuma M560V machines) and Swiss-type automatic lathes (such as Tsugami S206 machines).
Tool inspection and tool management equipment.
Inspection (quality assurance) equipment (such as optical comparators and coordinate measurement machines).
Surface finishing equipment (such as centrifugal disc machines).
Additive manufacturing equipment (such as production-grade 3D printers).

3) Ensure compliance with safety regulations to facilitate a safe laboratory and shop environment: 10%
Train faculty and students on the proper use of equipment, as required, including all relevant safety procedures.
Manage student access to equipment based on training and adherence to safety protocols.
Ensure the use by all equipment operators of personal protection equipment and the safe handling, storage and disposal of all hazardous materials.
Ensure that appropriate safety equipment (including first aid items) is on hand and fully functional.

4) Maintain an orderly and functional laboratory environment: 10%
Coordinate the ordering of laboratory materials and supplies in collaboration with the AMSI Program Administrator.
Maintain the AMSI laboratory spaces is a highly presentable manner and perform routine equipment maintenance tasks in accordance with manufacturers specifications.
Maintain laboratory documentation, including equipment operator manuals, safety documents (including MSDS documents), equipment use records and equipment use schedules.

Required Qualifications:
1) High school diploma, plus additional relevant coursework/training, such as a machinist apprenticeship.
2) Industry certifications/documented training as a machinist and/or toolmaker.
3) Machining experience.
4) CNC programming and use of CAM applications, such as Mastercam, plus hands-on operation of CNC mills and lathes.
5) Experience using CAD applications, such as SolidWorks.
6) Basic understanding of electronics and mechanics.
7) Excellent understanding of technical drawings, dimensioning and tolerances.
8) Experience using Microsoft Office Suite to include Word, Excel and Outlook.
9) Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with students, staff and faculty.

Preferred Qualifications:
1) Associates or Bachelors degree from an accredited institution.
2) Supervisory experience in a machining environment.
3) Training experience in either a machining or an academic environment.
4) Hands-on experience with inspection (quality assurance) equipment, such as coordinate measurement machines and optical comparators.
5) 5 or more years of machining experience.
