About the Position:

The Student Academic Services Unit provides activities and services which actively support California State University, Fullerton's missions by promoting the development of the whole student - academically, intellectually, and socially. We strive to create an environment where all students have the opportunity to succeed. The department coordinates the services of a number of student programs, many of which give particular attention to the education needs of low-income disadvantaged college students to ensure that they are able to successfully complete their college education. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Assistant Director, Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and First-Generation Student Initiatives (Student Services Professional IV). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

The Assistant Director for EOP and First-Generation Student Initiatives (Student Services Professional) performs highly complex professional Student Services work in reviewing difficult individual, group, or organizational problems, developing, and recommending courses of action from the investigation and analysis through the solution and implementation stage. Independently plans and organizes work requirements and tasks to be accomplished, determines work priorities, selects methodology from alternative approaches, handles unusual situations without advice or instruction, solves problems, and makes decisions that have an impact on the work of others. Works in collaboration with the Director of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and First-Generation Student Initiatives to deliver and integrate student support services specifically tailored for men of color. Under the general supervision of the Director, serves as an integral part of the center by leading and implementing holistic programming for EOP students. In collaboration with members of the EOP team, works collaboratively to design and coordinate programs that intentionally serve EOP students by promoting access and retention, enriching the college experience, and enhancing student development.

Responsibilities include: Leading, designing, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating student support services, student leadership programs, high-impact practices, and co-curricular learning and assessment efforts. Manages assessment efforts for the department and supervises and trains student staff. In addition, recommends courses of action regarding sensitive and complex student issues and concerns and serves as a liaison for student-related issues. Reports to the Director for the daily responsibilities of the role. Works hand in hand with the Director to recommend university-wide policies that pertain to EOP students to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs of Identity and Belonging. Contributes to a wide variety of initiatives within the Division of Student Affairs. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:
Bachelors degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution. Four years of professional student services work experience including experience advising students individually and in groups, as well as the analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A masters degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, clinical psychology, social work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctoral degree from an accredited college or university and the appropriate internship or clinical training in a relevant field may be substituted for two years of professional experience.

General knowledge of the problems and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel, and fiscal management. Knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods. Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities. Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Ability to complete assignments without detailed instructions. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities and of the overall organization.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:
Doctoral or terminal degree from an accredited college or university in student development, higher education administration, counseling or one of the behavioral sciences. Familiarity with student development and interpersonal communication theory, as well as group dynamic concepts. Experience advising student organizations, program/leadership development, and personal academic or career counseling. Skilled in individual counseling and advising, as well as group process facilitation. Ability to design and implement leadership training experiences for college-based student organizations. Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures, and practices of the assigned program, as well as a general knowledge of the policies, practices, and activities of Student Services programs outside of the assigned program.
