Position Announcement

Utah Valley University is seeking a Technician III - Electronic Access Control to play a key role in maintaining a safe, secure, and well-functioning campus environment. This position offers the opportunity to work with a wide range of technologies, including electronic access systems, key card infrastructure, and mechanical locking hardware, while supporting the daily operations of a dynamic institution. The role combines hands-on technical work with problem-solving and system oversight, allowing you to make a meaningful impact through installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and asset management. Summary of Responsibilities


  • Installs and/or oversees the installation, programming, monitoring, and repair of electronic access controls, to include proximity card and associated hardware. Applies current resource protection policies and protocols to the selection of appropriate electronic and/or mechanical access control devices.
  • Monitors, implements, and provides recommendations for all methods of electronic access control, including asset tracking, master keying, and maintaining all records of proximity access issued and returned. Assists in programming the security software, including time zones, access levels, and holidays. Accesses, updates, and maintains the key and electronic access database.
  • Under the direction of the Lead - Locksmith, estimates the scope and cost of electronic access control projects and requests. Advises University management as requested regarding technical options and strategies for maintaining and enhancing campus-wide building security in relation to electronic access control systems.
  • Provides technical support to UVU and Utah Division of Facilities Construction Management Project Managers regarding the design and installation of electronic access control systems as it relates to the construction of new buildings or building renovations. Reads and interprets blueprints and keying guidelines; uses appropriate discretion and knowledge of electronic access control systems and lock systems to preserve the integrity of the University's master system while also meeting customer requests.
  • Occasionally performs duties of a locksmith to include re-keying buildings, cutting and issuing keys, installation and repair of door and lock hardware, and other duties as assigned.


Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications


  • Graduation from a standard high school or the equivalent plus 3 - 5 years of electronic access control job-related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A.S. degree or higher in a related field plus 6 - 10 years of electronic access control job-related experience.
Licenses or Certifications
  • Certificate relating to electronic access control systems or locksmithing is preferred.
  • Lenel Certified Associate or Professional is strongly preferred.


Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Knowledge
  • Advanced working knowledge of electronic access control technology.
  • Knowledge of Lenel software is strongly preferred, as that is our current electronic access control system.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of University electronic access control systems, master keying systems, asset tracking, and access control protocols.
  • Advanced working knowledge of all facets of basic locksmithing.
  • Knowledge of Sargent hardware and keying systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of low-voltage power supplies, relays, and wire circuits.
Skills
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Skilled in the safe use of hand and all power tools applicable to the locksmith trade.
  • Computer skills, to include word processing and database management.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to interact effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
Abilities
  • Ability to install and repair electronic access control devices
  • Ability to provide operational guidance and leadership to technical staff in the area of specialty.
  • Ability to make accurate access security assessments.
  • Ability to plan, organize, implement, and administer complex record-keeping systems and procedures.
  • Ability to pull/fish wire through conduit and cable trays.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
