About the Position:
The Office of Academic Programs has responsibility for the planning, direction, and coordination of academic curriculum, programs, and policies for undergraduate and graduate education, general education, university advisement, assessment of learning outcomes, institutional and program accreditation, program performance reviews, and various other university and system-wide programmatic initiatives. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as a Retention Specialist (Student Services Professional II). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Under the direction of the Associate Vice President for Academic Programs or designee, and the Executive Director for Special Populations, the Retention Specialist works in support of strategic retention programs to facilitate degree progression and completion. The retention programs are housed in six departments: Educational Opportunity Program, Student Support Services, Veteran Resource Center, Athletic Academic Services, Male Success Initiative and the Center for Scholars. Works as a member of the Special Populations Leadership Team to assess and evaluate support services that provide advising and counseling. Conducts ongoing review of retention data within each specific cohort to identify common trends and errors resulting in failure to progress and provides solution-centered recommendations to decrease the rate of occurrence. Assists the Directors of the Special Populations Team in developing and assessing programs designed to increase retention and facilitate progress toward degree based on students' needs and program or institutional demand. Provides comprehensive academic advising, coaching, and other retention services for students in the Center for Scholars. Maintains a database of students supported, challenges experienced, and overall outcomes and presents progress reports as requested. Other duties as assigned


Essential Qualifications:

Bachelors degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public administration, business administration or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or a related field. A masters degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience. Additional specialized and relevant experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational management, research, and interview techniques. Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations, obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews, and advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Ability to reason logically and use initiative in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements. Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities. Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and of the overall organization.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree from an accredited four-year college or university. Experience with Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Experience working with a diverse student, faculty, staff, and community population.
